There is a huge new sculpture on the high line and any guesses to what it is. It is a pigeon! In this city there are pigeons everywhere and now they have a leader to attend to. There are pigeons all over and now people are making a special trip to come see this specific pigeon.

Pigeons are often called the “rat with wings” because they kind of act like rats when they live in cities. Always eating random things off the ground and always all over the place. Humans actually made pigeons this way. The only reason they are in cities is because humans domesticated them thousands of years ago for messages, food, and companionship. Once humans started coming to more urban places these pigeons were either released or escaped and had to adapt to their new city environments. Cities actually mimic where pigeons are originally from. They lived in cliff regions and the tall buildings in cities mimic the cliffs so they actually adapted pretty well.

This sculpture replicates what people think a pigeon looks like perfectly. Now that pigeons have been around and have adapted to the city life they have evolved. Now I always see piebald pigeons. I think piebald pigeons are the most pretty pigeons. They have unique appearances because they have patches contrasting black and white feathers because it is a genetic mutation that doesn’t allow pigment to form. Whenever I see a very unique piebald pigeon I am always taking pictures of them. I wish the new pigeon sculpture represented a piebald pigeon.

The public reaction to this new sculpture is so funny. It has become a hit not just to New Yorkers but all over social media as well. Some people do ignore it but others find it humorous. I definitely am one that finds it humorous. As I do miss the tree that was there I think the new pigeon is a great way to honor our neighbors the pigeons in a humorous way.
