College while fun can also feel overwhelming- whether it is school, friends, or even just having to get up and do your laundry it gets too much at one point for everyone. It is crucial to find an outlet that re-motivates you. Walking outside and surrounding yourself with nature is one of the best methods to reduce stress and clear your mind. Below, I listed my favorite walking trails in Winston in case you ever need a moment of peace or a fun workout.

Reynolda Trail and Gardens:

Reynolda Trail and Gardens is located directly off Wake’s campus with a cut-through behind Winston Hall. If you aren’t a student, there is a parking lot next to the trail entrance or in Reynolda Village. The entire loop is about 2.5 miles, but you can easily lengthen or reduce the mileage according to your needs. There are many trails that offshoot from the main trail, creating variety and different scenery during your walks.

Additionally, next to the Reynolda House, a preserved historical estate housing an impressive art collection is Reynolda Gardens. The gardens foster a vast collection of flowers including roses, irises, peonies, Hydrangeas, and more. The best time of year to visit is June when the trees are luscious and the flowers are in full bloom.

The Graylyn Estate:

A less demanding walk can take place on the grounds of the Graylyn Estate. While there are no strict walking trails to follow, I enjoy walking along the quiet road and admiring the beautiful architecture. The Graylyn was built in 1932, originally home to Bowman Gray Sr., president and chairman of R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company. Although the property now belongs to Wake Forest, the original, beautiful stone architecture was preserved. You can navigate through the 55 acres of lush meadows on the property! There are also rippling ponds and rich gardens to explore on the property.

Salem Lake:

A challenging trail is Salem Lake, a 7-mile loop that sends you around the beautiful Salem Lake. This is my favorite walking trail in Winston. The trail borders the lake and is surrounded by 1,465 acres of forest—you will definitely find peace and quiet here. The trails are impeccably maintained, making it a great spot to run as well. As you walk, you never lose sight of the lake, and the views are breathtaking. Turtles and blue herons bask in the sun and fly overhead. This trail is a great way to exercise and clear your mind while listening to the waves lap on the shore. If you plan to complete the full 7 miles, be sure to bring water, snacks, and any other personal belongings you may need! There are many other recreational activities, such as kayaking, canoeing, and paddleboarding, offered at the Marina Center.
