Social media is constantly flinging information at us, creating a place where trends are started and destroyed by the second. We are bombarded with the latest celebrity break up, national crisis, or hottest beauty product–making us feel like we are caught up in current events when in reality, we have no idea what is happening outside our TikTok feed.Â
One of my favorite ways to stay up to date with what’s actually happening around the world is subscribing to newsletters! A good newsletter is amazing because it is less overwhelming, delivered right to your email, and is free. Here are the best newsletters to help you stay in the know on sports to finance and everything in between.
Wall Street Journal
The Wall Street Journal (news) is a champion when it comes to unbiased news. I always search for outlets that do not lean extremely left or right politically as I do not want party ideals poisoning the information–I want the cold, hard truth without other opinions seeping in. WSJ, rated by AllSides, is balanced in the center between red and blue, making it one of my favorite newsletters. There is a plethora of options to choose from: What’s News will give you a daily roundup of headlines at no cost, WSJ News Debrief gives only the biggest news, Markets A.M. is geared towards the market data for all finance girlies, WSJ Politics & Policy offers a political analysis coming from their D.C. headquarters and From the WSJ Archives: 7 Financial Crimes That Rocked the U.S. takes a limited series tour to uncover some of the most shocking corporate mishaps from the past 100+ years. WSJ has something for everyone: newsletters on technology, marketing, business, AI, leadership, health, sports, and more. On top of that, they have student discount rates for their full program news at $2 per month!
New York Times
I already love the New York Times from the games (strands is the best) to their podcasts (be sure to check out Modern Love)–so obviously, their newsletter had to be a hit. They have a range of newsletters including news briefings and analysis, topics of interest like tech or politics, and subscriber-only. I follow The Morning which provides a free daily roundup of the day’s news and ideas. NYT often covers breaking headlines, as well as cultural interest pieces, like a revolutionary bakery in Brooklyn or insight into a particular murder victim’s life. If you want a little of everything, definitely give it a shot!Â
The Gist
The Gist is by far my favorite sports newsite because they are rooted in “leveling the playing field,” meaning that there is equal coverage for both men’s and women’s sports. Their newsletter is extremely entertaining and feels like I am scrolling through my Instagram feed; it is laced with witty humor, pop culture references, and best of all: a thorough breakdown of what’s happening in the sports world. The Gist offers three different newsletters including the Sports News Newsletter that is delivered four times a week, the College Newsletter, with the what’s what of college sports three times a week, and the Sports Business Newsletter, for all people who want to see the behind of the scenes on the business side of women’s sports. Whether you are an avid sports fan or just figured out the rules of basketball yesterday, I highly recommend The Gist to stay in the know!
Associated Press
If you are someone who doesn’t have time for a newsletter but still wants fast updates, Associated Press is here for you. Although they provide a laundry list of newsletters specializing in daily headline roundup, politics, sports, or religion, the AP News Alerts are great if you want brief updates on the breaking news. When something happens, you will hear about it with a quick email headline and blurb about what is going down. For all the art lovers out there, The World in Pictures is a unique newsletter as AP will send the most intriguing photographs straight to your inbox. How fun to get the news in a way that isn’t written word!
Morning Brew
To all the business savvy folks out there, Morning Brew has your back with a newsletter focusing on an assortment of business breakdowns. Their slogan, “become smarter in just 5 minutes,” stands true as you can get all the information about the business world from Wall St. to Silicon Valley. Their newsletter drops into your hands every day of the week and you don’t want to miss it!
Her Campus
For all my pop culture loving queens, there is no better newsletter to turn to than Her Campus. They give content from entertainment, news, relationship advice, workout tips, fashion help, and so much more, all of it sourced from their very own site and very own college writers. The Her Campus Newsletter is fun and helpful, perfect for anyone who needs a pick-me-up throughout their academic week. They also feature exclusive tidbits in their emails such as give-a-aways, scholarships, and campaign opportunities. To my Cal Poly students in particular: be sure to check out the Her Campus Cal Poly newsletter where we give the scoop on everything Cal Poly and more. Sign up so you can get a treat in your inbox (that isn’t a Canvas notification) every month!
It’s important to stay up to date with current events and it’s even more important to get your information from reliable sources (I love TikTok, but it does not count). Hopefully, one of these newsletters caught your eye so you can rest assured that your news is from verified and trustful sources. Happy reading!
