Winter is upon us! With shorter days, cold weather, and holiday cheer, it’s the perfect time of the year to build a calm and cozy space for yourself.
The cold months can often feel isolating for many. It’s not easy to get out of the house when the temperature outside requires you to put on layers and throw on your bulkiest pair of boots. Throw in the holiday obligations and these months can easily become isolating and overwhelming all at the same time. Amidst all of this, it’s important to make sure you have a comforting space to spend time in and come back to.
1. Find the Perfect Spot
Creating a cozy space is all about embracing the calm side of winter. This space can be a corner of your room or a little nook by a window, just a little part of your space where you can escape to for warmth and comfort. Having a window means the added bonus of being able to watch the snowfalls!
2. Lighting
Once you’ve found that perfect spot, the lighting is the most important part of making this space cozy. String lights and dimmable lamps are a great way to tone down the brightness of overhead lights. Affordable options can be found in stores and online. You could also use an essential oil diffuser or light a candle. This will not only add a nice scent (aromatherapy, hello!) to your space but also elevate the soft lighting.
3. Blankets and Decor
Blankets, pillows, and decor can do wonders for making spaces feel comfortable. Think of this space as your own cozy retreat. Use what you have, add in things that inspire joy, and make it your own. Throw in your favorite stuffed animals, make a little spot for your pet, and maybe even add in a lap desk to convert this space into a study spot when needed.
4. Comfort Clothes
The next step to making your winter spot feel as comfortable as can be is wearing some cute lounge sets, fuzzy socks, and house slippers. When you feel good, and comfy, your space feels even better. Now this doesn’t have to mean purchasing brand-new things; use what you have to the fullest. If there’s a pair of sweatpants that bring you comfort and joy, wear those with your favorite hoodie.
5. Feeling good inside and out
During the winter, it is more important than ever to take care of our mental well-being. There is no one right way to go about doing this. It’s important to engage in activities that involve taking a moment to slow down. Use your cozy space as a getaway and as a safe space where you can practice mindfulness. This could be a solo or guided meditation, a journaling session, reading time, etc.
