Self Love Languages are Real and Here’s How to Find Yours

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Hofstra chapter.

Over the past few years, knowing your love language has been all the rage. People are prioritizing understanding how they best receive love from other people and communicating that to their significant other and loved ones. However, receiving love from yourself is just as important as receiving love from others. Knowing your own self love language is monumental to prioritizing your own self love and appreciation. It could be the same as your regular love language or it could be completely different. Take a look at the different self love languages and find out which one works best for you!

Physical Touch

If you feel at peace when your body is comfortable and relaxed, then your self love language may be physical touch. If you like to book massages or take a nice bubble bath after a stressful day, you probably feel most loved when you are focusing on your physical health and comfort!

Ideas: Take a bath, do some yoga or level up your skincare routine.

Words of Affirmation

If you are the kind of person who likes to put positive sticky notes on their mirror or write in a journal every night, your self love language might be words of affirmation. Encouraging yourself through words and affirmations helps you feel more loved and appreciated!

Ideas: Write daily affirmations, talk to someone you love or read inspiring quotes or poetry.

Acts of Service

If you enjoy preparing to make situations easier for your future self by cleaning or keeping a planner, your self love language may be acts of service. Looking out for yourself and doing things to make your life easier makes you feel loved and at ease!

Ideas: Meal prep for the week, make a therapy appointment or create a cleaning schedule.

Receiving Gifts

If you like to reward yourself with small things to motivate yourself or enjoy self care days, your self love language might be receiving gifts. Giving yourself gifts makes you feel loved and appreciated!

Ideas: Spend a night in, buy one of your favorite treats or do something you’ve been wanting to do, but have been putting off.

Quality Time

If you enjoy spending time alone and doing things that are good for you, your self love language may be quality time. Spending quality time with yourself, taking care of yourself and being productive makes you feel loved and more at peace!

Ideas: Take yourself on a coffee date, read a good book or organize your closet.

Knowing your self love language is just as, if not more important than knowing how you receive love from others. Before anyone else can be there for you, you need to be there for yourself first. Take the time to really discover what your own personal self love language is. Be conscious of doing those small things on a regular basis that make you feel loved and appreciated!
