Easy Ways to Be More Environmentally Friendly as a College Student

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Manhattan chapter.

With Earth Day Coming up, we’re all reminded to be more eco-friendly and mindful of the impact pollution and waste have on the Earth. However, as any busy college student knows, sometimes are sustainability efforts are put on the back burner. If you’re looking to adopt easy habits that help the environment, then this guide is for you!

Grab a reusable water bottle: but make it fun!

This is such an easy way to cut down on waste as a college student. Instead of buying plastic bottles, buy a cute reusable one that encourages you to drink water! You’ll stay hydrated and you’ll be saving money– all while helping the Earth.

Use reusable bags at the dining hall

Since COVID hit, the college has halted and minimized indoor dining, which means having to put your food in plastic to-go containers and paper bags. While I commend the college for using paper instead of plastic bags, it’s still wasteful. So instead, try bringing reusable bags to the dining halls.

Recycle your trash

If you live in an apartment as many students do, odds are you and your roommates produce a lot of trash between. Although it may be easier to put all your trash in one bag, taking the extra effort to separate food waste from bottles and cans etc. is an easy way to be more environmentally friendly.

Monitor your water & electricity usage

Taking short showers and turning your lights off when you leave the room is such an easy way to cut down and water and electricity use, and help the Earth! Plus, if you live in an apartment, this is a simple way to help you save some money!

Spread the word about sustainable living

Whether it be in conversation with your friends or posting about it on social media, sharing your sustainability efforts is another way to spread environmentalism! The first step to creating change is education!

I hope these tips help you incorporate more environmentally friendly habits into your lifestyle!
