Hey Badgers! It’s officially exam season. While the online environment may have us missing those late-night study sessions at Plaza or the Library or getting a coffee run from Tim’s, exam season can still get overwhelming with all that Zoom fatigue. Here are some tips to ensure you don’t drain yourself out and give your best on your next exam.

Make a Study Plan

Making a study plan helps you plan, prioritize, adjust and stay focused. When I make my study plan, I use different colors to for each subject which really helps me to differentiate (and looks so pleasing to the eye!). I like using Google calendar, but you could use other applications like Evernote, Canva etc. and of course, the traditional pen and paper method. The Brock A-Z learning services hosts various workshops during this time to help you make a study plan.

Take Breaks

I cannot stress this enough. Take. A. Break. Studying 24×7 will lead to burnout and eventually cause you to lose focus. Studies have also shown that taking frequent breaks helps you retain information better and for longer periods of time. The Pomodoro method is a great way and one I personally use.

Eat Well and Stay Hydrated

Food is fuel. The better your eating habits, the more you’ll be able to power through those study sessions. And remember to drink a lot of water because it helps deliver oxygen and important nutrients to the cells which allow your brain to function properly.

Exercise

Moving your body even for 20 minutes is a great way to reduce stress and calm anxiety. Make sure to schedule some form of physical activity in your daily routine to ensure that you stay focused and healthy. It is also a great way to boost your mood!

Talk to Someone

Your mental health should be of utmost priority to you. If you feel like you are getting overwhelmed and stressed during exam season (or any time of the year) open up to a family member, friend, or speak to a professional. Brock SWAC offers some great resources throughout the year.

Sleep

Get some sleep. Seriously. A good night’s rest allows your body and mind to recharge, leaving you refreshed and alert. It helps improve productivity and memory, both of which you need plenty of during exam season. Seven to eight hours of sleep every night is crucial!
