Thanks to the (now) year-long lockdown in the UK, summer 2021 is looking like the year’s biggest event…even if we cannot go abroad for fear of a £5,000 fine. However, being stuck inside for weeks did not slow the number of packages the delivery services sent through my post-box (my mum can definitely vouch for this) – so why would the prospect of staying in the country for summer have the same effect? By now, all of the major fast-fashion brands have a whole section dedicated to ‘June 21st’ outfits or lockdown exit attires – which can be great style ‘inspo’ for your future pub garden and picnic in the park ensembles.
Already we have social media influencers showcasing new style trends for summer 2021. House of Sunny is the sustainable fashion brand that has been taking the media by storm lately, highlighting its green earth message alongside funky and bright seventies prints. Most recently, Olivia Neil shared her adoration for the PARADISE SET on her Instagram (which was then shared to @houseofsunny). Neil paired the iconic swirl co-ord with an ensemble of green accompaniments, a lime baguette bag, an oversized shamrock hoodie and of course, her trademark iced matcha from Starbucks. Due to House of Sunny’s sustainability and zero-waste policy, their prices are higher than most, but dupes are available from less-expensive brands like Missguided and AliExpress. I am sure these seventies prints will be very popular, and arguably already are.
Although the colour palette for summer 2021 is still undecided, sage-green, neutral skin tones (think beige, honey, almond, ivory) and sea-blue are definitely staples. Bolder colours are dominating the accessory pool at the moment, with clay and recycled glass rings making an appearance on many influencer’s fingers. These chunky statement pieces add a layer of colour to your look, I recommend looking at @chonkyrings on Instagram for more information on these out-there accessories.
Knitted bralettes and crocheted tops are some of the weirder trends I have seen making their way into summer catalogues. Zara has been at the forefront of this development, releasing a range of ‘open-knit’ and ‘ribbed knit’ waistcoats and tops. The intricacy of the knit, paired with the bright oranges and whites make a bold statement – and when does Zara not represent at least 60% of our wardrobe? I have seen many independent sellers on both Etsy and Depop selling their own versions of these crocheted tops, and I endeavour to support small businesses whenever possible – especially during the pandemic.
Wide-leg trousers are sure to be a wardrobe staple this year. High-waisted bottoms are always popular, regardless of the season, but more neutral shades of the classic piece are gaining more popularity as the temperature increases. They are perfectly oversized and would pair well with a louder print halter-neck top, or a knitted bralette. The trousers are not only super flattering, making you look taller and longer, but also are super light and loose-fitting (perfect for warmer days when you don’t want to wear shorts or a skirt!). My favourites are the H&M beige wide twill trousers which are only £12.99, but beware they are very long!
So, look out for bold shades and prints whilst shopping for your summer essentials, and if you are looking for further inspiration – I recommend looking on Pinterest, Instagram, or even TikTok for upcoming style trends. I have linked a few social media accounts below for your browsing…
