It’s winter, and also windy season, which means you might be experiencing static hair. Every time you look in the mirror it’s sticking out in all kinds of crazy directions and nothing is working. Brushing it doesn’t help either. So, how do you fix it? I have some tips.

First, why do we experience static hair? According to Redken, static electricity occurs when two unalike objects rub against each other. Usually, this goes away with humidity. However, in a dry winter, it means that the electric charge causes your hair strands to repel from each other.

If you’re in a hurry and need to get rid of your static hair, rub a dryer sheet along your hair. I got my hair cut recently and was asking my hairdresser about remedies for static hair, and she suggested this for a quick fix. Your hair might smell like detergent, but it works!

For more of a longer-term solution, you’ll want to turn to something like hair oil or leave-in conditioner. These products will help to put the moisture back in your hair and get rid of the static. You’ll want to apply these after washing your hair.

Another solution is to spray some hairspray on a metal comb. The hairspray will tame the fly-aways, and the static will transfer to the metal comb instead of your hair. In general, using a wide-tooth metal comb or a hairbrush with metal bristles will be better than a plastic one for taming static hair.
