3 Reasons Why You Should Participate In Spring Cleaning

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCLA chapter.

Growing up, my family moved a lot. We moved countries, states and cities. The constant moving helped me get rid of a lot of items I wouldn’t have looked through otherwise. I’ve done many spring cleanings throughout the years because of moving, and getting rid of stuff always made me feel better. Here are a few reasons why you should consider doing some spring cleaning:

You Will Only Own Valuable Items

If you’ve never purged any of the items you’ve acquired throughout your life, it’s more than likely that you have a lot of items you don’t care about. Going through all your childhood boxes and items helps you figure out what could be donated to someone who would appreciate it more or what can be tossed. An extra perk is that now there are apps where you can sell your items and make a quick dollar throughout this process. After you’ve carefully examined everything, you’re only left with items you truly care about and actually use.

Minimalist Life

If you’re like me and like to be able to pick up all your items and go wherever you want, purging of your belongings is great. Because I moved so much growing up, I eventually had a very small amount of personal items. I had the essentials like cute outfits, childhood items or books. I’m currently able to pack all my items into a few suitcases and boxes. I have everything I need and I can still pick up and leave for another country tomorrow if I wanted. When you have a lot of unnecessary items, moving can be stressful because you either don’t know what to do with your items or you don’t want to go through the process of purging everything.

Organized Life

A lot of items can lead to clutter. Once people have settled into a place, they don’t see the point in going through all their items to see how they can make their home more organized, or worse, they stuff everything into random boxes or closets they never want to open. Going through all your belongings and getting rid of things you don’t need allows you to open up spaces in your home or to make it prettier because there aren’t a thousand items on counters or dressers. For example, my closet is currently all color-coded and I can see all the items of clothing I own because I have only kept my most valuable pieces of clothing. Plus, organizing can be therapeutic. You get to donate what you don’t want and find the perfect place for everything else.

As Marie Kondo once said, if it doesn’t spark joy, get rid of it. Maybe doing an early spring cleaning will help make your life a little better.
