How to Survive Valentine’s Day- Long Distance Relationship Edition

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UVM chapter.

All year long, single women, women in long-distance relationships, and even couples alike resent the most dreaded day of the year, Valentine’s Day. In all honesty, considering my boyfriend lives about 300 miles away, my favorite Valentine’s Day tradition is curling up on the couch with a bag of Hot Cheetos and crying to 10 Things I Hate About You. But, you know what, new year, new me, and I encourage everyone to make the most of this Valentine’s Day, even with the solitude that COVID has brought about. We are in this together ladies, so here are some of my best tips for surviving Valentine’s Day, while in a long-distance relationship.

Tip #1

I know I said I have an ongoing tradition of watching movies alone and in desperation, but I suggest doing this with your boyfriend/girlfriend. The app Teleparty(formerly Netflix party) is truly a lifesaver, and the best part is, you can watch Netflix, Hulu, Disney Plus, and HBO together, even if you are hundreds of miles apart. You just go to the website, connect to Google Chrome, and follow the rest of the steps, and you can instantly watch a movie with your significant other. Throw in some popcorn and enough Kit Kats to drown your sorrows and boom, it’s almost like you are on a real date.

Tip #2

What’s better than romance? Food. If it’s within budget (because broke college student and all), plan a Facetime date night. Order your significant others’ favorite food using a third-party delivery service like door dash, and have your boyfriend/girlfriend do the same. It’s the best of both worlds, your favorite food, and your favorite person.

Tip #3

If you are feeling a little extra lonely and are in need of some human interaction, call up some of your favorite gals and celebrate a good old fashioned Galentines day (following proper COVID restrictions). You can even have those Hot Cheetos and cuddle up with your best gals to watch 10 Things I Hate About You on repeat.

Tip #4

I know I mentioned not wanting to be alone for Valentine’s, but as they say, your first love should always be you. So, dedicate this day to celebrate you. Create your own spa day, go to TJ -Maxx for the 10th time in a week, treat yourself to a coffee, take a walk to the lake. Then, slap on a face mask and FaceTime your boyfriend/girlfriend for a relaxing virtual Valentine’s date night.

Well, that’s all the tips I have for now. With the start of 2021, I am hopeful for a year filled with positivity and support. It would make me so happy if these little tips help you, even if it may just be in a small way. Here is to you and an incredibly amazing year!

With love,
