The ’90s Are Making A Fashion Comeback

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SJSU chapter.

It’s true what they say about fashion happening in cycles of 20 to 30 years, and the start of 2021 has made the ’90s make an entrance. Of course, looking back a lot of 90’s trends were questionable, but they come back with a new twist to match the new age. Here are a few fashion staples that will be necessary for 2021!

1. Statement shoes

Flatform heels, chunky soles and heels, and Doc Martens. These are the 3 expected most popular trends for shoes this year. As we saw in 2020, chunky sneakers were all the rage. Now the trend is spreading to fancier dress shoes. Flatforms are heels that are the same height from front to back. Besides the style, the comfort and ease the shoe has is the most appealing aspect!

2. Pretty in Pink in 2021

Fashion experts are calling pink the color of the year. In addition to pastels and other neutral pink tones that work into everyday outfits, colors like neon pink, magenta and other loud pinks are also expected to show up throughout the year.

3. Baggier the better

We learned last year to value comfort over couture while in quarantine. This year, fashion asks, why not both? Oversized sweaters, boxy blouses and flowing dresses may replace tight knits and curve-skimming tops in 2021. With options like Depop and thrift stores, it won’t be hard to find a slightly looser fashionable look. Depop is also a great place to find more Y2K and 90’s trends!

4. Unexpected Sleeves

Puffed shoulders and unexpected prints are said to make an appearance. The oversized ruffled style is more ’80s than ’90s, but it is still bound to show up. In all styles from blouses to dresses and casual to fancy, a trendy sleeve will be a good investment.

5. Down to Earth

Earth-toned colors are expected to make a comeback to replace the classic blacks, greys and whites we have gotten so comfortable with. Mustard yellow, rust red and deep brown are on the horizon. In addition to the fashion world, earth tones are expected to be popular in other industries such as home decor.

In addition to these trends, there are many others expected to show up in 2021. Remember to stay safe, and make your mask match your outfit!
