College Roommate Horror Stories Part I: The Boy Issues

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Hawaii chapter.
First off, thank you for all the submissions! Click here to submit.
This will be broken into parts with themes since there were many submissions. This week’s theme is The Boy Issues.
There were many submissions about how people and their boyfriends cross the line. Word of advice, if you have a boyfriend and he stays at your apartment all the time, your roommate is not actually cool with it. And if they are not paying rent or doing a chore, WTF?! Move out.

Please enjoy, each roommate was given a nickname.

1. The Takeout

Campus: UH Manoa

Gender: Female

Story:

“It was my sophomore year, and I’d already had a psycho roommate my freshman year. I was naively optimistic. I mean, I couldn’t have two crazy roommates in a row, right? This girl had a fiancé, who I met at the start of the semester, and he seemed fine, just antisocial and shy. She was working at a takeout restaurant as a cashier and would CONSTANTLY have coworkers over. I was a little annoyed because she would never ask and be super loud while I was trying to do homework, but that’s just life with a roommate, right? Long story short, I walked into my apartment once to her having sex with one of her coworkers on the kitchen table. Graphic sex, butt naked on the surface that I eat on. We ended up kind of laughing it off because I wanted to stay on her good side, and she ended up telling me that she was cheating on her fiancé and was constantly complaining about how lazy he was. Needless to say, I was scared and so was my cat, who was a first-hand witness to the whole thing. After she started sleeping with several of her coworkers, I thought for sure she would end it with her fiancé, but she kept bringing him around and I would have to very awkwardly interact with him, knowing that she was cheating and secretly hated him. Eventually, he even ended up moving in with us (he had previously been living with his parents, was unemployed, and wasn’t going to school), but she had never even asked me about it, and after a couple of months of him being there 24/7 (I’m not exaggerating. This guy never left. Was always on his gaming system and SCREAMING), I pulled her aside and let her know I was uncomfortable with the situation. He’d been eating my food and using my stuff without asking, and he was a SLOB. She got hella mad at me and started being super passive-aggressive, leaving sticky notes everywhere, texting me rude comments, etc. I eventually confronted her about this as well and she ended up moving out the next week. I’ve sworn off roommates since then.”

2. The Wifi Stealer

Campus: UH Manoa

Gender: Female

Story:

“My roommate was a mutual friend, we did our quarantine on Oahu and thought we were twin flames. Moral of the story we were NOT. Three months into living in Hawaii her controlling boyfriend slept at our place EVERY SINGLE NIGHT, at our SHARED food, left his surfboards in our living room for over a month (a 600 sq. ft apt), and they would bounce on a 20 ft air track until 2 AM (that was inflated covering our ~entire~ living room for 2 months). When I politely asked if she could have him help out with dishes every so often she pretended it was not a problem. The dish situation seemed to improve for a few weeks but neither of them would say more than hello to me. I continuously asked her if we could talk maturely without him there. She would schedule a time and cancel over and over again. I was no longer comfortable in my living space and stayed locked in my room most of the time. One day I woke up from my nap, walked out of my room, and everything (I mean, EVERYTHING) was gone but the couch. No kitchen utensils, bar cart, coffee table, TV, pots/pans, bath mat, EVERYTHING, was gone (we split the cost of items when we purchased and moved in. The cherry on top – it was the week before finals and she TOOK THE FREAKIN WIFI.”

3. The Exhibitionist

Campus: UH Manoa

Gender: Female

Story:

“My roommate had been disrespectful and did not follow any of the rules we put in place about living together but my last straw was what lead to her moving out. I got a call at 8 am from an ambulance saying they had my friend and I needed to get the only level 1 trauma site on the island as fast as possible. So naturally, I get there fast once I arrive I realize she has a traumatic brain injury and a skull fracture so I am not leaving her side. We spend 10 hours in the ER we are then taken to a room at which point her dad is on a plane flying to Hawaii. Once he arrives, I hang out and I go home for the night. But before going home I text my roommate I will be home in 15 mins cause I have had a long day and I know her boyfriend is over. She replies okay so I think I am all set I will get home set everything down then shower cause it was a long day. Well, I walk into the room 20 mins after I texted her, and her and her boyfriend are having sex mind you we live in the freshman dorms where the door opens into a common hallway shared by the whole building. I open the door and I was so blown away I say my sentence set everything turn around and walk out. And the best part is she never fully realized that she was the issue until this happened. I think they also used my bed when I went home for break so that is fun!”
