Why Christmas Eve is Better than Christmas

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Rowan chapter.

Disclaimer-This article will not talk about the religious implications of Christmas or Christmas Eve as a holiday. This is purely my opinion about the holiday.

When I was a child I experienced the Christmas time slump. My presents were unwrapped and put away, Christmas dinner was digesting and my family members were all sent to their respective homes. It was really sad thinking that I had another year to wait for the festivities of Christmas again. I realized that Christmas Eve always ends in sadness. You get your hopes all year and in a flash, it’s gone.

But Christmas eve is different. The whole day is spent in excitement and eagerness and it ends with…Christmas day. Here are a few other reasons why Christmas Eve is better than Christmas.

Giving Christmas presents stresses me out

It’s no secret that Christmas is a capitalist holiday. Giving gifts is one of the biggest parts of Christmas and I spend a lot of time where I’m opening gifts nervously watching other people. It stressed me out and I’m happy that opening gifts on Christmas eve is taboo.

You still can look forward to dinner

A lot of people like Christmas because of the Christmas feast. But, Christmas eve has a big dinner too (that usually ends in sneaking some of Santa’s cookies).

The anticipation literally keeps you up at night

I stopped believing in Santa like a decade ago. But for some reason, I’m excited all day and all night during Christmas eve. The anticipation is one of the best parts of Christmas eve.

Christmas movies hit differently on Christmas Eve

Is it just me or does watching movies on Christmas feel like old news? But, Christmas movies on Christmas Eve feel more authentic.

Christmas Eve lasts all-day

Christmas arguably ends the second that presents are unwrapped. I know this isn’t the true meaning of Christmas but it feels like presents are it. Christmas Eve is a holiday that feels that lasts 24 hours.

Christmas Eve feels like magic

I don’t know how else to describe the night of Christmas Eve. It feels like anything is possible and all of the awful things in the world are kept at bay. It’s such a surreal feeling that no other day of the year can replace.
