5 Homemade Teas to Help Your Body Smile

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BU chapter.

In an effort to cleanse my gut and skin, I’ve pretty much switched to homemade herbal teas for the most part. After trying multiple concoctions at home, I’ve selected five of them that really work—taste and all!

Turmeric Tea

This is probably the millionth time you’ve heard me talk about turmeric and how it’s literally a savior and staple in my kitchen, but can you blame me? Simply boiling some water over the stove with a teaspoon of this superfood, a hint of black pepper, and honey is a great way to start your day, especially if you want some added warmth, a stronger immune system, and glowing skin during the winter.

Ginger Lemon Tea

This is great for whenever you’re cramping hard when your buddy TOM (Time of the Month) pays you a visit. The warmth that ginger provides helps to alleviate cramps and is also just great to cleanse your gut, while the pang of vitamin C from the lemon helps your immunity and gives you brighter looking skin over time.

Hibiscus Tea

This one is definitely a more recent edition to my stash of teas but I wish I’d known how beneficial it is sooner! Not only does it taste great, but drinking a cup a day can help give you the clear, glowing, young-looking skin you deserve! Its potent vitamin C content gives you that glow and compounds found in hibiscus also help your body to produce more collagen molecules which helps you look youthful, naturally.

Peppermint Tea

If you’re struggling with acne or get one or two odd spots during your period, peppermint tea is a must-have! It has anti-androgenic properties that help balance your hormones by reducing testosterone levels and, therefore, oil production in your body to help heal your acne or prevent the spots from surfacing altogether. I’ve been drinking it almost every day for a month now and it really does work!

Matcha Tea

This one, like turmeric, is one of those ingredients that you’ve probably heard me rave about too many times, but as I said, it’s with good reason! The ample antioxidants and caffeine in matcha make it the ideal morning drink––what’s more? It gives you a gradual boost of energy that lasts the whole day rather than a rush of energy that dies in a few hours. While some people prefer to have it in the form of a matcha latte, I’ve cultivated a taste for it and have actually grown to enjoy it, so I prefer to have mine with hot water.

I hope these concoctions help you stay warm, healthy, and glowing––both inside and out!
