If I’ve learned anything this year, it’s to always be grateful. I know, I know, it isn’t easy to see the good when so many bad things happened this year. But there are many things to be grateful for! Even in 2020. Good health, a roof over your head, even something as simple as having access to wifi. A lot of people didn’t get that.Â
While I was in lockdown I got really into love languages. There are five: words of affirmation, acts of services, quality time, receiving gifts, and physical touch. These apply to your friendships, romantic partners, and family. When you identify and practice your (and your partner’s) love language, you’ll start understanding how to express your love to them, leading to a better relationship. I think now, more than ever is the time to show the people around us how much we appreciate them. Which is perfect with the holidays coming up! So, I made a list of simple and affordable ways to express gratitude for each love language. Having an understanding of these and knowing yours will make loving people much easier- and fun!Â
Â
Words of Affirmation:
-
Write a letter or send an unexpected postcardÂ
-
Every day send this person a reason why you’re thankful for themÂ
-
With holiday gatherings coming up (Covid safe, of course)Â praise them for their recent accomplishments in front of everyone
Acts of Services:Â
- Breakfast in bed/ make their favorite dinnerÂ
-
Buy them lunch or dinner and deliver it to their workplace, even if it isn’t a hard shift
-
Do chores together (you can make this fun!)
Quality Time:
-
Getaway weekend trip. Make sure your time together is uninterrupted with your phones away
-
Movie night
-
Remember that you can still spend quality time together if you’re in a long-distance relationship. Facetime them before they go to bed to talk about their day togetherÂ
Receiving Gifts:
-
Buy them a snack that they’ve been craving recently
-
Give them a gift certificate to their favorite place
-
Give them a sentimental gift, like a framed picture of the two of youÂ
Physical Touch:
-
Hugs are nice– just make sure it’s friendlyÂ
-
A massage, especially during times of stress
-
Create a secret handshake (this works great with people who aren’t your significant other)
