Amy Coney Barrett is the womxn who has been aggressively pushed by the senate and POTUS to replace Ruth Bader Ginsburg, a prime advocate for womxns rights and civil liberties, on the Supreme court which could pose a threat to the work and accomplishments set by Ginsburg. Barrett’s nomination is a big deal because she will now hold power over cases including abortion rights, gay rights, business regulation and the environment.
Coming up soon will be cases that will determine big events such as the Fulton v. City of Philadelphia case where they will rule in favor of or against religious foster agencies being able to discriminate against gay prospective parents. There has been much fear as to how the court will rule considering that there is now a conservative majority on the court. Along with the fact that Barett has been a prime advocate for religious freedom expansion and has shown her stance against same-sex marriage in a number of legal litigations where she speaks in favor of the opposing.
Recently too, the worry of her nomination was a talking point on various social media platforms. The girl scouts Twitter page, for example, tweeted out a congratulatory message for Barrett, but later took it down and offered an apology tweet after much backlash, such as one where a woman tweeted, “Girl Scouts, this tweet is really disappointing and won’t age well when access to safe abortion and the healthcare needs of millions of women and girls is gutted in this country because of Barrett’s addition to the court”.
It’s Insane to think about how an impeached president managed to appoint three supreme court judges and that they will be there for life. Barrett’s nomination was, really, a disregard for the legacy of Ginsburg. It could pose a threat to the significant civil rights and accomplishments that have been made to this point; instead of moving forward we’re being pushed back.
