Spooky Season is here! It’s that time of the year to get our freak on. For those of you who aren’t big fans of movie genres like thrillers, horror and slashers, don’t you worry. If you are a scaredy cat like myself, and don’t want this to prevent you from getting into the Halloween spirit, you’ve come to the right place. Here’s a list of my top four not-scary-but-still-Halloween movies that I want to share:
- Coraline

Coraline Jones is a young girl that moves into an apartment in an old house with her parents, both of which are usually absent in her life. One day, she discovers a door that leads her into an entirely different world of her own. She enters a different reality where she has other parents, other neighbors, and where animals can talk. After stepping out of this ulterior universe, Coraline discovers her reality has been altered; her parents are missing and she must go back into the other, creepy world to rescue them.
- Hocus Pocus

This 1993 film is an all-time classic! It tells the story of Winifred, Mary, and Sarah, three witches who were executed 300 years ago after practicing witchcraft. Max Dennison explores the house with his friend and his sister and accidentally lights the cursed candle that brings the witches back to life. The trio bring a whole lot of magic and horror with them to terrorize Salem, Massachusetts. With the help of the boy turned into a cat, they must obtain the witch’s book of spells to prevent them from becoming immortal.
- Goosebumps

The world of R.L. Stine gives people of all ages the courage to meet horror. After unlocking all of the Goosebumps books and bringing the monsters and creatures to life and into the real world, a group of teenagers unite with Stine to attempt saving their town. This group is able to lock all these creatures back into their stories, right where they belong.
- The Nightmare before Christmas

This Tim Burton movie tackles more than one season. This Halloween-and-also-Christmas movie is about Jack Skellington, the pumpkin king from Halloween Town. Tired of the monotony that comes with organizing every single Halloween, he takes a trip to Christmas Town and decides to sample a different holiday. After kidnapping Sandy Claus, he tries to understand and take charge of Christmas by giving it his own scary twist. However, this doesn’t turn out as he expects. Skellington finds himself in a whole lot of trouble trying to fix the messes he makes.
These films are childhood classics with plots that will ensure a fun and nightmare-free Halloween!
