Why Overcommitting Isn’t Always a Bad Thing

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SAU chapter.

We all know someone who likes to say “yes” to everything: volunteering to help with club activities, working quite a bit, being involved in college athletics… the like. That someone, for your information, is me. While some people say that it is bad for people to have too much going on, I think it is very beneficial!

For starters, I think I should probably explain everything I am involved in…

  • Her Campus: Not only do I write, but I am also on the exec board!

  • SAU Women’s Track and Field: I compete in long sprints and high jump. Go Bees!

  • KALA-FM: I am the marketing/communications ScholarBee at our school-sponsored radio station! Be sure to follow us on social media!

  • Catich Art Gallery: I also help out with marketing and communications here! Again, be sure to follow us on social media!

  • The Buzz: My newest addition to my activities that I am so excited to begin!

  • Outside Job: I work at Sun Tan City as my outside job to pay for school!

  • Coffee drinking: Okay, this isn’t really an organization, but it’s a big part of my life.

Sure, it’s a lot, but with a positive attitude (and three planners), it is totally doable. Having an extra busy schedule may be stressful, but I think it can be very helpful. First, it teaches you time management skills. If you have a full course load while still having additional tasks you need to complete, you learn to take advantage of every opportunity to get these things done. This not only helps now, but it can help in the future when you are planning to excel in your chosen career!

Second, it helps you learn and make new friends. Being involved in so much has allowed me to meet so many amazing people and has given me the opportunity to improve so many aspects of my life. Everyone who has been involved in my busy schedule has taught me many things, so I can guarantee that everyone you meet will have something to offer you and vice versa.

Finally, it makes you work hard and stay humble. After a long week of busting your butt to get things done, it feels amazing to look back and say “I did that.” I think it’s very safe to say that I enjoy working hard. It gives me a feeling of accomplishment and allows me to reach my high-set goals that make me exactly who I want to be.

So, like I said, having an extra busy schedule can be hard and very stressful, but in the end, it all pays off. Looking back over the past year, I would not change a single thing I put time into (and wrote down on my schedule).
