Toxic positivity is the insistence of having a positive outlook on all experiences that in turn causes one’s denial of their real emotions. Oftentimes, fostering such an environment causes an individual to overlook real conflict, trauma, and pain within their life.

Here are some key phrases to be aware of when faced with toxic positivity in one’s life:

Toxic positivity

  • Just be happy

  • Good vibes only

  • Stay happy

  • Failure is not an option

  • Choose joy

  • Just relax

  • You’ll get over it

Here are some phrases of support that can be used instead of cultivating toxic positivity:

Authentic support

  • Let me know how I can help you

  • I’m here for you

  • You’re not alone

  • All vibes are welcome here

  • Is there something we can do today that you’d enjoy?

  • Let it out, it’s okay

  • Failure is a part of growth and success
