As a college student, and somewhat of a perfectionist, I often find myself getting extremely overwhelmed by everything on my plate. Midterms, projects, COVID-19, the 2020 election, and things going on in my personal life – it can all be too much. We’re all at the age where “real life” is beginning and it seems like there is always something on our to-do list. But in the midst of everything you have to do, it’s always important to give yourself a break. This can look different for each one of us; it all depends on what helps you personally escape from the chaos of your life and healthily clear your mind, even if for just a few minutes a day. If you’re unsure where to begin, here are a few of my favorite ways to take a break:
Go on a Nature Walk
Something about the fresh air and actually taking the time to consider God’s beautiful creations is so therapeutic to me. Walking in nature allows me to focus on something other than what’s going on in the world and in my life and realize that there are things so much bigger than me. If you’re able, try taking a walk or a stroll through a park or even on campus. I promise you’ll find something beautiful.Â
Exercise or Do a Yoga Practice
Exercising is a great mental health break for so many people – whether it’s hitting the weights, going for a run, or doing a laidback yoga practice. Personally, yoga is my favorite, but find what works best for you! Doing some form of exercise will not only benefit your body but will benefit your mind. After every time I exercise or do yoga, I automatically feel better. It gives me the opportunity to do something for myself and take a break.
Watch Your Favorite Movie or TV Show
You’ve probably been studying all day. Take an hour or so and watch your favorite movie or TV show. This is definitely a simple, easy, and light-hearted way to give yourself a break from your work and forget thinking about whatever that has been consuming your mind. Some movies or TV shows can even be nostalgic which will put you in a better mood.Â
Take a Hot Bath or Shower
If all you have the energy for today is to take a shower or bath, that’s enough. Relaxing in the shower or bath is so cleansing and gives you some quiet time to yourself. Put on some music, light a candle, get a bath bomb, pour a glass of wine – whatever you want to do. Just take at least 15 minutes and chill.Â
Make Time for Your Hobby
This is one that I have personally been slacking on. I love to read, paint, bake, and more but lately I haven’t given myself much time to just do what I love. Regardless of what your hobby is, make it a goal to give yourself at least 20 minutes a day doing what you enjoy. Making time for yourself is always a necessity.
It’s so vital to our health and well being to give ourselves a break. Life is tough and way too short to only focus on being productive, being perfect, or fixing all the world’s problems. Whether you take some of my tips listed in this article or you find another way, always remember to give yourself a break. Take time for yourself. Prioritize YOU.Â
