In response to the pandemic, we’ve all had to acclimate to the ‘new normal’ that incorporates social distancing, health regulations, and steady quantities of hand sanitizer into our daily lives. In the beginning, it was certainly an adjustment. But now, almost 6 months in, we’ve grown accustomed to putting a mask on before leaving our rooms, cleaning our hands regularly, and standing 6 feet away from our friends.
With this new normal has come other adjustments to our daily lives. For instance, fashion.
Prior to the pandemic, it wasn’t uncommon for girls to compliment each other’s outfits. Shoes, jewelry, makeup, jackets, fun socks, cute skirts, and funky jeans were always good conversation starters. This is still true, but one thing I’ve noticed since arriving on campus is a new accessory: masks.
Since masks are required almost anywhere outside of our houses, it is no surprise that people have started having fun with it. Masks are a new way of expression. I’ve seen masks with inspiring or amusing quotes written across them. I’ve seen artsy masks with ribbons instead of elastic ties. I’ve seen an array of patterned masks – floral, gingham, dotted and more. Whatever the case, masks have become a source of connection between people. (And, most importantly, they keep us safe!)
So if you’re ever looking for a way to spice up your outfit, don’t hesitate to have fun with your mask. Even if you can’t see it, maybe it will make someone smile :)
