Why Gilmore Girls Will Always Be My Favorite Show

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Rowan chapter.

Even though Gilmore Girls came out 20 years ago, it is always my go-to show on Netflix. The story of Lorelai and Rory has always been amazing to me–a “perfect” mother-daughter duo that I want to have with my daughter. I love their addiction to coffee, music, books, and junk food. The seven seasons go through Rory’s adolescence and adulthood and the growing up of her mom as well.

One of the things that I like most about the show is the town, Stars Hollow. If I ever found a small town with that much charm and a house like the Gilmore’s, I would stay there forever. Plus, who wouldn’t want to eat a burger at Luke’s Diner or cake from Weston’s? The people in the town are another plus too! I’d take the quirky, innocent Kirk trying to sell me shady soaps or t-shirts than anyone else.

I feel like the show is able to showcase how it is to grow up with a single mother who has shifty ties with her parents. I love that Lorelai is able to be financially independent for the most part aside for her parents paying for Chilton and her Prius for Rory. Lorelai’s mother and her never had a steady relationship but Rory strengthens them. There’s no perfect relationship in this show and that’s pertinent to experience in a fictional show. I feel like newer TV shows have perfect standards and set high expectations for young women but Gilmore Girls incorporates feminism and independence.

The literature incorporated into the show is AMAZING. From Moby Dick, The Raven, Emma, Night, One Hundred Years of Solitude, and more. There is even a book store in Stars Hollow, which is even more of a reason to move there. Rory and Lorelai are very well educated and there is always an emphasis on Rory being scholarly. Spoiler Alert: she ends up going to Yale for journalism. But like I said, nothing in this show is perfect and the show includes her taking a semester off. To me, this was a huge moment. I’ve never seen anything like this in a show and was so happy to see it with a character I resonate with.

I have shamefully watched this show, all 7 seasons 3 full times and I’m currently rewatching it. I’m only on season 1 but I like to start it during Autumn since it is overall a very cozy show to enjoy. I also want to start a reading challenge that is all the books mentioned in this series as well as movies. I would mind watching Casa Blanca or Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. They also added a sequel to the series called: A Year In a Life. Honestly though, I was disappointed with the Netflix series and thought it could have been better. However, nothing can take away my love for the original series and the cast. It will always be my number one and favorite show.
