Finding A New Normal In College

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at WVU chapter.

Let’s face it. This semester isn’t going to be anything like we planned. Whether you’re a freshman just starting your college journey, a senior preparing for graduation, or anywhere in between, nothing you imagined this year to be is reality. When major changes happen, it can be hard to adapt and find a new normal, especially in the era of COVID-19. However, with a little planning and a lot of going with the flow, creating a new normal in college this year doesn’t have to be that hard. Here are a few things you can do to make this year just a little bit easier:

Create A Routine

With classes being mostly online, we aren’t leaving our houses much to go to campus. It can be hard to find a routine when some classes don’t even have a set meeting time. But, it is extremely important to create some sort of daily schedule in order to keep you feeling organized and less stressed. Set aside time just to work on classes, while also creating time to relax and hang out with friends (virtually)!

Wake Up At The Same Time Everyday

Class schedules are really weird this semester. There might be some days where you have no classes and some where you have to be on Zoom at 8 a.m. This can make it hard to keep the same sleeping schedule and wake up at the same time everyday. However, waking up around the same time each morning helps to create a routine.

Set Aside Time to Spend With Friends (Virtually)

Even though everyone is still socially distancing, it is important that you find time to spend with people close to you— even if it’s just on Zoom or Facetime. Keeping relationships strong helps you not feel so isolated during this time and establishes some sense of normalcy. Get creative and have a Zoom movie night or cook the same meal on Facetime together!

Try To Stay Involved on Campus

With most campuses advising students to only be on campus for class, clubs and student organizations have to meet mostly online. This can make it hard, especially as a freshman to get involved, but finding ways to get involved can help to fill time in your dorm or apartment. They are also a great way to make new friends. Most clubs and organizations are still functioning this semester— just virtually! In fact, Her Campus at WVU is working hard this semester to provide its members a great experience by connecting them through Zoom meetings and virtual activities! Check out your school’s student organization website to find out when clubs are having Zoom meetings.

Try to Eat Balanced Meals

It can be hard to create healthy eating habits when you’re constantly stuck in your dorm or apartment and ordering delivery just sounds easier. However, it is important to be eating well-balanced meals in order to stay healthy throughout the school year. If the thought of cooking sounds daunting, try starting with just a few meals a week or give meal-prepping a try. If you’re in a dorm, try to keep nutritious snacks in your room like apples, peanut butter, and vegetables!

Although this semester is bringing unexpected challenges, it is important to stay positive and work to adapt to this new normal. It can be hard as a college student to navigate this new environment while coping with the disappointments of this year, but it is necessary to make changes and keep moving forward. Hopefully these tips will help you to create a new normal within your own lives while making the most of your semester!
