After being in quarantine for almost two months, staying at home all the time is getting a little old. But, it’s something we have to do so our lives can go back to normal as soon as possible. Now that the semester has ended, we are going to have even more free time on our hands. One way I’ve been passing the time is by watching movies literally every day. It’s nice to be transported into another reality, even if it’s only for two hours. Here are some movies you should watch (or re-watch) during quarantine!
1917 (2019)
The film follows the journey of two men who are sent to prevent their fellow soldiers from walking into a trap during WWI. 1917 is filmed in one shot, allowing the audience to follow the journey from start to finish without any cinematic cuts. Because of this, it was almost like I was inside the film. Although I originally saw 1917 in theaters, it was just as breathtaking when I watched it again during quarantine.
The Truman Show (1998)
The Truman Show is about a man whose entire life is a television show. Once he discovers that he is being controlled, he must decide what to do. This film seriously made me question whether my whole life has been a simulation or not. Movies like this are perfect for taking your mind off of COVID-19 and quarantine because they bring your mind somewhere else completely. If you haven’t seen this film yet, you’re missing out.
Inception (2010)
Speaking of movies that make me wonder if my whole life has been a simulation, Inception REALLY makes you question it all. The film follows a man who has the ability to go inside people’s dreams and explore their subconscious mind. He and a team of others with this ability go on a dangerous mission to plant an idea in someone’s mind that would change the way they think completely. The musical score is fantastic and the cinematography is beautiful. Plus, Leonardo DiCaprio!
Scott Pilgrim vs. The World (2010)
Scott Pilgrim vs. The World is a genuinely fun movie to watch. The film follows a young man named Scott Pilgrim who must battle and defeat a girl’s seven evil exes before they can be together. The movie is based on Bryan Lee O’Malley’s graphic novel series, Scott Pilgrim. This greatly influenced the cinematography of the film, as the fight scenes look like they were taken straight out of a comic book. If you’re in the mood to have a real laugh, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World is perfect for the occasion.
The Social Network (2010)
The Social Network tells the story of how Mark Zuckerberg created Facebook and the bridges he burned along the way. This film gave me an entirely new perspective on Zuckerberg and it was really interesting to learn about how he got to where he is today. The cast was FANTASTIC, it includes Jesse Eisenberg, Andrew Garfield, Justin Timberlake and Armie Hammer! This was a great film overall and I highly recommend watching it if you haven’t already.
About Time (2013)
My friend recommended this movie to me and I absolutely loved it. About Time is about a man who discovers he can travel through time and change the events of his own life. He uses this power in his attempt to find true love. This film was created by the same man who created Love Actually, Notting Hill and Four Weddings and a Funeral – which explains why it’s such a fantastic movie.
If all else fails, I recommend watching all of the movies from a franchise you love. Since quarantine began, I’ve binged all of The Hunger Games and Star Wars movies. My next plan is to watch a Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings marathon. Watching a genuinely good movie is a great way to take your mind off of everything happening in our world. I hope you enjoy these films as much as I did.
