Since the world has taken a slight pause, I finally had the chance to watch a long-awaited Netflix series.

Netflix aired a brand new TV series that is based on Andrzej Sapkowski’s fantasy book series The Witcher—not to be confused with the video game. On December 20, 2019, most viewers were driven mad with excitement. Starring Henry Cavill (Geralt of Rivia), Anya Chalotra (Yennefer of Vengerberg), and Freya Allan (Princess Cirilla), “The Witcher” expresses what it is like to be judged in a medieval, supernatural world that fears the differences in everything and everyone. If you are a person that loves gore, action, comedy, fantasy, or even romance, then this show is definitely for you!

There are so many unexpected twists and turn throughout this series. The creatures are not like the fairytales that you read in other books, but there are others that are seemingly normal supernatural beings. There are wizards/sorcerers called Mages, characters with elven blood, monster hunters like Geralt, and more otherworldly beasts. The amount of times that I have gasped and shouted at my phone have driven my sisters crazy for my silence! I let my littlest sister—let’s be honest, she’s taller and likes gore more than I do—see an episode of The Witcher with me, and she said that there was a little too much blood and guts for her.

In all honesty, The Witcher is about finding your purpose in life, and why anyone should be chosen or forced to live the life that they do. Geralt of Rivia is a monster hunter that was created to be someone who does not feel emotions, but he still wants to find a real purpose for his being (and maybe love). Yennefer of Vengerberg was cast out by everyone she saw for her abnormal appearance, but she wanted power to make sure that no one tries to put her down again. Geralt and Yennefer are two people that have made black-and-white choices because another character created them for a specific purpose, but they seek to do more in their lives. Princess Cirilla is a young, innocent girl who has always been under her grandmother’s thumb ever since her parents died. Ciri (her nickname) has not yet had to make many important choices, but she will. Like Geralt and Yennefer, Ciri feels like she has a greater purpose to fulfil; she just does not know what it is yet. I do not regret watching this show at all, and I can’t wait to see what comes next for The Witcher.

The Witcher was already filming a season 2 when filming had to stop for safety measures, but (hopefully) it will still be released in 2021. If you’re interested in unexpected twists and lots of action, go catch up on the first season!
