It’s a breezy, spring day and you’re sprawled out in the grass with your favorite book. The golden sun kisses your shoulders as you turn the milky white page… Whether you’re ready for a fun summer read or just have some extra free time on your hands, you can never go wrong with adopting a new book. I’ve asked my friends to tell me about the best books they have ever read, and this is the list I have come up with! A compilation of adventure, romance, inspiration, and poetry mixed in with a few of my personal favorites, of course.
A Thousand Splendid Suns: Khaled Hosseini
This is a heartbreaking tale of an unlikely friendship during war and tragedy, on the streets of Kabul. Two women, with an age difference gap of a generation and opposing viewpoints of love, find themselves fighting through the dangers of what their homes have become. Through survival and sacrifice, the two bond like sisters.
The Adoration of Jenna Fox: Mary E. Pearson
17 year old Jenna Fox suddenly awakes from a year-long coma… at least that is what they tell her. Why can’t she remember what happened before the accident? The memories that swirl through her mind are cold and unfamiliar. Faces around her are unrecognizable. Whose thoughts have infected her brain? Jenna wonders what to believe in, as she searches for the truth.
The Book of Lost Things: John Conolly
Reality and fantasy are blended into one, as a young boy uses the words of literature to escape. After a heart-wrenching disaster, he looks to the books on his shelf for comfort. Soon, they begin to whisper secrets and carry him to a land unknown. Here, he discovers heroes and monsters, ruled by a mysterious king who keeps all of his secrets in an untouchable book.
The Glass Castle: Jeannette Walls
A resilient brother and sister learn to build their own path in life when their parents’ support is inadequate. Their hippie, artist mother is free-spirited, claiming to believe in her children’s independence, while their father figure is often jobless, drowning in booze. When sober, he teaches them geography and astronomy, inspiring them to follow the stars to their dreams. These children grow up barefoot and dirty, counting on each other for reassurance.
The End of the Ocean: Maja Lunde
In a devastating, worldwide drought, two stories are told. Watch a journey unfold through the lense of an older woman who sets sail across the ocean, alone, fighting her past to save the future of many. As precious ice is slowly destroyed, the sea cries for help. Flash forward in time to shadow the life of a father and young daughter who have lived through the war over thirst. Ripped away from the rest of their family, the two are in search of their loved ones when they come across the old sailboat that the elderly woman stowed away. How does this father-daughter relationship link with the mysterious woman from the past? Through their search for love and their push from agony, the story must go on.
The Dreamers: Karen Thompson Walker
A freshman girl at a small, Southern California college closes her eyes one night and never opens them again. No one can wake her. Days later when she passes away, it is too late. Suddenly, this virus spreads to other girls on the same campus floor. A deep sleep is casted over the campus, almost like a spell. The students are dreaming vividly, as doctors scan their brains and notice high levels of brain activity. What is going on inside of their consciousnesses and why can’t they be woken?
