If you know me, you are aware that I am a big thrifter. The main reason why I love it so much is that it’s a way for clothing, furniture or trinkets to be used again, which makes it a sustainable shopping option. Here are a few of the things that I keep in mind while perusing the aisles of once-forgotten treasures:
Don’t limit yourself when it comes to sizes and gender. It is always worth venturing over into the men’s section to find yourself a nice and cozy oversized hoodie or “mom” jeans.
Adjustments can be made. If you think something is cute but the straps are too long, you don’t like the cut or wish it didn’t have sleeves, don’t scrap it! It’s not like you’re paying $30 for a t-shirt in need of alterations!
When in doubt, crop it. I highly recommend starting out with small adjustments, if you crop too much then it won’t work for you the way you want.
Limit yourself to what attracts you the most. Walk along the racks and stop when you see a particular color or pattern that catches your eye. This is a huge time-saver and helps you to figure out your individual style and interests.
Dress comfortably and simply. You want to make it as easy as possible to change and try on new pieces!
Go on special discount days. Some thrift stores have great deals on holidays or for a specific tag color any day of the week.
Check your new finds carefully for rips or stains of any kind. If it’s minor, it can be sewn or washed!
Have fun on all of your repurposing endeavors! It’s the best feeling to find something worth using for less.
