Internships and any volunteer experience enable you to gain first-hand exposure of working in the real world. It allows us college students to harness the skill, knowledge, and theoretical practice we learn. It’s important that a college student should partake in at least one internship. This is the time of year that applications and positions begin to be filled up. Here are a few tips on how to get a head start on finding internships, applying, and going through the interview process:
- Decide What Type of Internship You’re Going For
Do you prefer season or year-round internships? Or perhaps a summer internship? I feel that most college students go after the summer internship. When you decide what time of the year you want to do your internship, think about what type (regarding the field) of internship you would like to do. Obviously, students like to go for an internship that is based in their field of study.
- Do Your Research!
This is one of the hardest parts because it’s basically long hours of searching for that perfect internship. Of course, it all depends on whether you want to volunteer, or you would prefer a paid internship. There are thousands of internship opportunities out there waiting for you. Be specific with what you search online when looking for internships, as well.
- Ask Your Professor to Write You a Letter of Recommendation
I can’t tell you how helpful it is to have professors who are willing to help you with your application process. A professor, and especially one who is from your field, is a great person to go to for a letter of recommendation. Meet with your professors and ask them for a brief voucher about yourself and your hard work. They can really help you get on the right path.
- Apply as Early as Possible
When I first started looking into my first professional internship, I started searching and applying as early as December during the holiday break. Most internships have deadlines during the months between February and April. It’s important to get a head start at looking for internships so you can see the deadlines and have more time to do the application process.
- If Being Interviewed, come up with Questions to Ask
Some internships may want to interview you if you make it to the next step of the application process. If you’re application goes as far as a phone or in-person interview, think about questions to ask. Also, think of some questions that you may get asked, such as a brief description of yourself or why you believe you’d be perfect for the position. Treat the interview as if it’s a full-time job position.
Best of luck to everyone on looking for internships this year!
