If you’re a fan of Disney’s 1998 animated film Mulan, then get ready to relive your childhood through the live-action remake. Disney began its filming in August of 2018 and is set to hit theaters on March 27, 2020.
Much like the 1998 version, the new live-action follows the Chinese legend of Hua Mulan, played by Liu Yifei, and her journey as she fights for the Imperial Chinese Army to defend her family’s honor. Disney just dropped the newest trailer and poster promo for the film.
However, the film won’t feature classic elements from the animated version like characters Mushu, her comical dragon sidekick, and heartthrob warrior Li Shang. The remake will not be a musical but the trailer teases an orchestrated cover of the ballad “Reflection.” It will leave you nostalgic and teary-eyed by the end of the trailer.
The film also brings new elements to the table like the character Xian Lang, a shape-shifting villain, played by Gong Li. By adding new ideas to the film and not having it be a shot-by-shot remake, it can stand on its own level and introduce new ways of filmmaking and creating popular remakes.
Either way, the trailer for the 2020 film shows great promise through colorful costume design, a celebrated international cast, beautiful shot compositions, and of course, our favorite woman warrior battling for her country. And if that’s not enough to convince you to watch it remember Mulan is a female empowerment icon who didn’t need a man to fight her battles.
