My favorite social media site is Twitter—it’s simple, concise, and an extremely large communication network. While I only have an embarrassing 100 or so followers, I use Twitter to keep up to date with current events around the world. Whether its politics, social justice, music, or memes, Twitter fills my brain with content in tiny 280-character fragments. It’s the news of the millennial generation. While I only have small number of followers, I think that I’ve curated a pretty solid list of people to follow to meet me daily news needs. Keep reading to see my recommendations of influential women you should follow on Twitter to bring some feminist energy to your timeline.
Abby Govindan- @AbbyGov
To start off, let me tell you about this girl Abby. She is a comedy writer based out of New York City. She also does a lot of stand-up comedy in her free time. I love her Twitter because it reminds me a lot of stand-up. She uses her personal experiences to make super relatable jokes, and her tweets help me remember I’m not the only weirdo out there. Abby’s also great to follow because she retweets a ton, and I often see political and feminist conversations happening online thanks to her.
Ariana Grande- @ArianaGrande
I’m sure I don’t need to explain to any of you who Ariana Grande is. While this pop star icon has been stealing our hearts since her Nickelodeon days, if you’ve been living under a rock, you may have missed her impressive Twitter presence. She has one of the highest follower counts with super good engagement rates. This makes sense because she tweets in a way that’s very different from other superstars out there. It’s clear no one is tweeting for her, rather Ariana just expresses her genuine thoughts and reactions for the world to see. In addition, she interacts with her fans through the app on a regular basis. I think this is a really cool way to connect with your fanbase and show them appreciation, so shout out Ari.Â
Chrissy Teigen- @chrissyteigen
Chrissy Teigen is the queen of Twitter herself. Another famous celebrity, Chrissy gives fans a look into her real life through her profile. She talks about her family and her relationships with her friends and other celebrities. I’m obsessed with her account because her life is truly goals, and I would do anything to be her. Twitter let’s me pretend I could be.Â
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez- @AOC
As social media becomes more and more popular, it opens more and more communication networks. How cool is it that we have direct contact via the internet with government representatives? While some politicians aren’t great at Twitter, AOC deserves some form of award for her online presence. She’s relatable and funny, but she also uses her platform to educate people on political issues and promote voter participation.Â
Alicia Garza- @aliciagarza
Alicia is a social justice warrior, making waves in the name of equality online and in real life. She is a co-founder of the Black Lives Matter movement, and she works as the self-proclaimed “head bitch in charge” at Black Futures Lab. Her tweets are great for keeping up on social justice issues and learning about ways to advocate for issues that you care about.
Michaela Okla- @SheRatesDogs
An LA-based comedian named Michaela runs this account, and I’d highly recommend giving her a follow on her personal account as well. She’s super funny and just started making YouTube videos, so if you’re looking for a new influencer to obsess over, she might just be the one. SheRatesDogs is a submission-based account where girls send in creepy, cringey messages that they’ve received from men. This account can be a bit much, but it’s nice that we can laugh together about the horrible things that people say.Â
