Plants have always been hard for me to keep alive, I definitely didn’t inherit my grandmother’s green thumb. I never thought it would be possible for me to be a thriving plant mom until I found plants that are super easy to care for, require little sunlight, and infrequent watering. Here I compiled a list of some of my favorite hard-to-kill plants!
- Snake Plant (Sansevieria Trifasciata)
-
Native to West Africa, the Snake Plant is my number one favorite plant! This plant was the first plant I didn’t kill. I’ve managed to keep it alive for almost a year now! The snake plant requires water only when the soil is dry because it is very drought resistant. The snake plant also requires very little light, making this plant the best indoor starter plant. It is great for dorms and first apartments where lighting is limited. Do keep this plant away from pets though because it is toxic; I recommend a tall shelf to display this beauty.
- Â ZZ Plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia)
-
While the ZZ plant is not one I currently own, it is such an easy to care for and beautiful indoor plant. These plants are so easy to care for, they might as well be a fake plant. Much like the snake plant, the ZZ plant is also toxic to pets. The pros of this plant are also that it is extremely drought resistant and requires little to no light. One of the only ways to kill this plant is by overwatering it, so luckily if you are someone who often forgets to water plants, this one is for you.
- Marimo Moss Balls (Aegagropila Linnaei)
-
Surprisingly these plants are not a moss at all. I love these plants because they remind me of having a pet fish! The Marimo Moss Balls, are also easy to care for and all they need is to be submerged in water. The only real maintenance they require is that they need their water changed every 2 weeks and their water agitated (stirred) every few days. These little moss balls do require low light, but not full sunlight. If they receive too much light, they will start to brown They are often referred to as “the puppies of the plant world,” because they are so soft that you can’t help but pet them. Also, these plants are wonderful to have around pets because they are non-toxic.
- Pilea (Pilea Peperomioides)
-
Pilea plants are some of my favorites and hopefully my next plant baby! These plants are a little bit higher maintenance than the previously listed plants but still super simple. These little cutie plants like to be in a brightly lit place but also not in direct sunlight. A nice windowsill is a perfect home for the Pilea plant. They also require a little more watering, about once a week or if the leaves start to droop.
Plants are great for adding style, color, and life into any space. Especially with it about to be winter, it is nice to add some spring into a home! There are so many plants to be discovered and so many that are amazingly easy to care for! Try sites like thesill.com, Pinterest, or even Facebook groups to discover your own plant babies.
