Lorenzo Suarez: Mi nombre es Lorenzo Emmanuel Suárez Alvarado. Curso mi 5to año de Ciencia Animal en la UPR Recinto de Mayagüez. Tengo 21 años y lo mismo trabajo en un veterinario como hago serigrafia.
HC UPR: How’d you start making tote bags?
¿Cómo empezaste a hacer los bolsos?
LS: The idea arose after the increase in tuition cost. I wondered what I could do, within my abilities, to generate money. By that time, I was already into photography and I also knew that I wanted to do something with these pictures. At the time, my girlfriend had just received a hand-drawn Yay Mondays! tote bag. It wasn’t the only tote bag she had which made me ask why she had so many. She told me that they’re very practical and that a lot of people use them: hence the tote bags. I decided I would make my own but I can’t draw in the slightest. I started looking for options, first it occurred to me to make stamps with the designs, but I gave up. I kept looking for information until I came to screen printing. I still have a lot to learn.
La idea surgió luego del aumento de la matrícula. Estaba pensando, dentro de mis habilidades, que podía hacer para generar dinero. Para ese momento, ya estaba tomando fotos y sabía que quería hacer algo con ellas. A mi novia le acababa de llegar un tote bag de Yay Mondays! Es una marca con diseños dibujados a mano. Me fije no era el único tote bag que tenía. Me habló de lo funcionales que son y cómo muchas personas los usaban. De ahí surge los tote bags, los dibujos era otra misión, porque yo no sé dibujar y era más fácil meter la pata en ese aspecto. Comencé a buscar opciones, primero se me ocurrió hacer ponches con los diseños, pero desistí. Seguí buscando información hasta que llegue a la serigrafía. Todavía tengo mucho por aprender.
HC UPR: Where do you get your design inspiration from?
¿De dónde sacas la inspiración de tu diseños?
LS: All my designs are original and are based on the photos I’ve taken. As I don’t know how to draw, I trace the photos on the computer in a single color. In general, the more work I have to do for university, the more likely I am to sit down and look at the photos so I can decide if it looks cute or if they could be drawn.
Todos mis diseños son originales y son basados en fotos que he tomado. Como no se dibujar, calco las fotos en la computadora en un solo color. Por lo general, cuando más cosas de la universidad tengo pendiente es cuando me siento a mirar las fotos y decidir si se ve lindo o si se pudieran dibujar.
HC UPR: What other creative outlets do you have?
¿Qué otros medios creativos tienes?
LS: Photography; without that, the idea of tote bags wouldn’t have been born.

HC UPR: What’s your creative process like? What helps you get into that headspace?
¿Cómo es tu proceso creativo? ¿Qué te ayuda a entrar en ese espacio mental?
LS: I don’t have a specific creative process. Sometimes I get up wanting to convert a photo into a design which means that I’ll leave the drawing software after having done three or four drafts. I’m not very good at sitting down to read or study, so when I have more university things, that’s when I sit down.
No creo poder decir que tengo un proceso creativo específico. A veces me levanto con ganas de convertir alguna foto en un diseño y dejo la aplicacion abierta fácil como con tres o cuatro borradores. Yo no soy muy bueno sentandome a leer ni estudiar así que cuando más cosas de la universidad tengo es cuando me siento a calcar.
HC UPR: How do you make the tote bags?
¿Cómo haces las bolsas?
LS: It all starts with the tie-dye. If a client has not asked me for one, I make bags for my girlfriend to sell them in Río Piedras. I ask for your opinion about what color combinations or just take two inks and experimented with the patterns. After 8 hours, (though I usually give it 24 hours) I rinse the tote bag and let it dry to put the designs on.
Todo comienza con el tie-dye. Si un cliente no me ha pedido uno, hago bolsos para que mi novia los venda en Río Piedras. Le pido su opinión acerca de qué combinaciones de colores o simplemente cojo dos tintas y experimentó con los patrones. Después de 8 horas, aunque por lo general le doy 24 horas, lo enjuago y dejo que seque para ponerle los diseños.
HC UPR: How much do they cost?
¿Cuánto cuestan?
LS: The tote bags are $13 if you want it with a design or if you want it with the tie-dye, nothing more. At $15, you get the tie-dye and the design and if you want 2 they’re at $25 no matter what style or design the tote bags are ($12.50 each)
Son a $13 si lo quieres o con tie-dye o con el diseño nada más. A $15 es con el tie-dye y el diseño y si quieren 2 son a $25 sin importar el estilo que quieras ($12.50 c/u).
HC UPR: Where can we find you and your tote bags? How can we buy them?
LS: You can follow me on Instagram. I upload all my stock, the photos, the designs and when I am making a new design. You can also look for tote bags on the first floor of the Sebastian Gonzalez Garcia building in the UPR. There are a few and every week I try to bring you new ones. If you don’t see one in particular that you want, you ask her or they write to me by Instagram.
