I’ve always been one to plan my Halloween costumes far in advance. In fact, a friend and I once spent a year hand designing and sewing our Posion Ivy and Harley Quinn costumes.
But now, as pumpkins begin to dot the halls of LSM, I realize that I have absolutely no idea what I might wear to the Halloween themed frat parties and gatherings that are quickly approaching. I also don’t feel like Ubering around to 20 different stores trying to piece something together or wearing some pre-made expensive costume. That’s why I thought I’d do a little research on easy DIY costumes, perfect for any college student on a budget!
1. The Ripped T-Shirt Zombie
I’ve actually attempted this one before and can confirm that it is an easy enough craft to complete with friends at a pregame. AKA, this is for the friend groups that are always deciding their plans last minute.
The only thing you should definitely do before the day of is making sure you have a white t-shirt, or any old t-shirt really, that you are willing to cut up. Then, you just make strategically placed cuts all over the shirt to make it look like you’ve been attacked or scratched with sharp talons. No worries if you cut too much and it seems a bit too scandalous to wear! Just throw a cute tank top or neon sports bra underneath and people will think it is part of the look!
2. Animal Ears
Cat ears, mouse ears, any animal ears you can get on Amazon, or borrow from a friend! Then for a cat or mouse just use some black eyeliner to add whiskers and a nose. Wearing all black or animal print works perfect, and boom then you have a whole costume!
3. Sports Player
Pair any jersey with eyeliner put on to look like eye black. Extra points if you choose a specific player and tape their name on your shirt!
4. Alien
You can do this theme in so many different ways! One of the easiest ways to do this theme is to wear anything that sparkles, is shiny, or has neon colors, and then put your hair in two “space buns”. With some cool looking makeup, everyone will know that you’re an alien!
5. Be Crafty!
A black shirt and some construction paper, or some cool makeup can go a long way. Some of the coolest Halloween costumes from when I was younger include a friend who sewed glow sticks to a black shirt, and another who hot glued candy and pictures of rappers all over his shirt to say “I’m a candy wrapper!” Or tape a print out to your shirt of something a character from your favorite TV show would wear with some cool makeup! Maybe get your critique on by dressing like a frat boy, and acting super masculine for the whole night. Get crafty!
