The January of fashion is upon us—September fashion weeks. New York, London, Milan, and Paris are the capitals of couture and runways. But what does it all mean? The fashion Gods have shined their light on Spring 2020 with their multiple collections and it’s time to sort them out.
You don’t usually see students walking to class in Prada or Miu Miu, but that doesn’t mean you can’t fake it until you make it. By combining some of my favorite runway looks this season, the concepts and ideas from the runway can in fact be applied even if you’re just a college kid trying give looks on the way to class.
Ankle Dresses and Exaggeration
Photo: Backstage at Erdem
Erdem’s show perfectly spelled out s-e-x-y without showing too much skin or a waistline. Just like designer, Erdem Moralioglu taking inspiration from a different culture and revolutionary role model, the clothes we wear have a story to them. Think out of the box, like the vibrant colors and endless tiers of victorian style dresses, you could sport an ankle-length dress or skirt with boots. The common theme is one solid color being enough to portray the message you’re aiming for. Life is too serious, so be brave enough to exaggerate. Exaggerate with a big bag, an outlandish hat, a scarf with a mind of its own, etc.

My favorite and easiest trend to pull off is a classic blazer with an accessory that accentuates your waist, whether that be a belt or fanny pack-like purse. Even better is an oversized blazer with a belt to give off the illusion of a dress. It’s a quick way to look sharp—a “I have everything together” look. As far as the bag, if you’re not a bigger bag the bag the bigger the joy type of person, Jacquemus made mini-handbags a must have.

As soon as I saw this look, it screamed simplicity done right. The material doesn’t have to be as authentic as italian silk, but a good look-alike will do. Or satin-like pieces, any top that gives complexity to such a basic outfit. A top like this allows your shape to do all the talking, the clothes are just accessories to it. The pop of color on the heels was the cherry on top, matched with not one—but two bags as a crossbody. That’s an area where you can get creative.

Plaid is the safety net of late days. You have to purposely try to do plaid wrong for it to look like a mess. I promise you, if you’re running late, plaid is your best friend. Something that looks like you had all morning when in reality you had ten minutes. A look like this can be achieved with a thrifted suede belt and the biggest cotton, or faux-fur coat one can find.

I couldn’t help but include this detailed shot, I’m a sucker for any and all combat-style boots. Color correlating boots and a handbag with a texturized outfit is the epitome of effort paid off.
