When it comes to fall fashion, I am a big fan of mixing prints and designs with different materials. Mixing textures and materials gives your outfit a sense of depth and detail that creates for the perfect fall aesthetic.
With the start of sweater weather quickly approaching, cozy knits are on the rise and creeping back into all of our wardrobes (TBH, I’ve been ready). Here’s how I styled my fall print and knit ensemble.
First off, my personal take on the trend:
Knitted lightweight sweaters are a go-to when transitioning from summer to fall. They are easy to layer with, but also look great on their own. Try pairing a lightweight sweater with some floral slacks or a skirt for a comfy yet cute look. This sweater/floral combo is so playful and chic for fall — it’s perfect to wear out to Sunday brunch or even to class. Get a similar look and rock these statement pants like you mean it.
Look towards inspiration
One of the main sources of inspiration I look to when trying to achieve the perfect mixed texture look is the one and only Yara Shahidi. Her style is bold and unapologetically herself — and she completely nails the mixed texture look.
I am living for the floral skirt and graphic top combo and Yara Shahidi pulls it off with grace and ease. Not to mention she is making an important cultural statement with her “Respect Existence or Expect Resistance” sweatshirt. This outfit has the best of both worlds, highlighting an important message on top and a chic design on the bottom.
She is absolutely killing the game here with a contrasting mixed stripe top and bottom. Wearing stripes on stripes can be risky when not executed properly, but Yara here slays the challenge and looks elegant and confident in doing so every time.
Know your textures
There are traditionally four different types of knitted sweaters that are popular in fashion. These include the traditional knitted sweater, the ribbed sweater, the boucle sweater, and the cable knit sweater.
A traditional knitted sweater is great for a cool day in autumn. You can wear this to class, out with friends or out on date night.
The ribbed sweater is one of my all-time favorites, the knit is tighter, and the fabric is stretchier, I wear these sweaters when I know I’m going to be on the go all day long.
A boucle sweater is known for warmth and comfort because it is made with thick boucle yarn. This sweater is best for those cold and bitter winter months when you need something extra cozy.
Last but not least, and arguably one of the most popular sweaters in fashion, is the cable knit sweater. I wear cable knit sweaters to add dimension and depth to my outfits when styling for a textured look.
The mixed texture look is definitely a classic autumn staple and there are so many ways to style it, just get creative and own it. Don’t forget to tag @hercampusstyle in your mixed texture looks this fall!
