Women in Charge: An Incomplete List of Local Businesses Owned by Women in Salt Lake

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Utah chapter.

Owning a business can be an enormous task for anyone, no matter who you are or what your background is. Small businesses are a huge part of Salt Lake City and some of them are overlooked due to bigger businesses and mainstream stores. Surprisingly, a decent amount of small businesses in the Salt Lake area are owned by empowered women who are running their businesses and succeeding despite any stereotypes. As a woman, supporting other women is extremely important and beneficial to society. So, in order to make it easy for you, I made a list of women-owned businesses in the Salt Lake area that are really worth exploring.

Salt and Honey

Local Makers, Local Goods

Salt and Honey is a cute market with so many amazing finds and art by local makers. From jewelry to works of art to clothing, you can find some really charming pieces. Salt and Honey is really interesting because it strives to support local designers and artists in the state of Utah. The merchandise is always changing and they are always receiving new pieces from different vendors throughout the year. It’s located at The Gateway downtown, so it is fairly close to campus and is totally worth the trip. My roommate purchased a pair of vintage cowboy boots and I purchased a pair of silver earrings, so you can really find whatever you are looking for. You might also find things you didn’t even know you needed.

Mineral and Matter

Artisan Jewelry, Gifts and Minerals

Mineral and Matter is a store downtown that carries hand crafted jewelry, art pieces, décor, minerals, and crystals. It is such an amazing store with a very welcoming vibe. The shelves are lined with crystals, rings, trinkets, and other beautiful pieces. The store also serves as the owner’s studio where she creates lots of the pieces you see in the store. Along with her own pieces, she also sells her favorite pieces from other makers like her. The store is so captivating that my roommate and I spent about 45 minutes in the store just admiring the merchandise and crystals displayed.

Tinker’s Cat Café

Café With Adoptable Cats

I apologize in advance to anyone who is allergic to cats, you definitely should not check out this café whatsoever, but at least it gives you more time to discover the other businesses in the area. This café is the first cat café in Salt Lake and it serves a range of coffee and tea drinks. It is basically a big playground for cats where you can interact and play with all of them. The best part about the café is that if you happen to fall in love with one of the cats, you can adopt them! Tinker’s Cat Café works with the Salt Lake County Animal Services department in order to find forever homes for the cats in the café. However, there is no pressure at all to adopt; you can go only to play with furry friends while enjoying refreshments.

The Land of Salt

Handcrafted Jewelry, Gifts, and Workshops

The Land of Salt is a delightful little boutique conveniently located right around the corner from Mineral and Matter. It carries charming pieces of handcrafted jewelry along with other charming knickknacks. It also offers workshops for group events because the owner is so passionate about her craft and learning new things. The range of pieces she sells is incredibly wide; you can find simple accent pieces or bigger statement pieces that will really add to any outfit. I highly recommend checking it out the next time you’re looking for more jewelry to add to your collection.

These were just a few of the amazing women-owned businesses in Salt Lake. There are so many more stores that are worth checking out in the area that I didn’t want to spoil for you. Some of these include Abyss Piercing, The Petal Coop, Uintah Standard, and Atelier. I encourage you to check them out for yourself or make a whole day out of it with your gal pals. The stores I mentioned are all so unique and are important to look into to support local women in business. You won’t be disappointed, so try them out!
