So, I went out on a limb at the end of March and applied to be an intern with this cool, local radio station back home. Shocker—I got it!
Four months flew by in the blink of an eye. Waking up at 4 a.m. became normal, and closing out the day at 12 p.m. meant I could still hit the beach.
Nestled in between New Bedford and Dartmouth MA, was Fun 107. It became my second home and my co-workers became my family. The grind would begin at 5 a.m. on weekdays. Every day was similar but different. I would always edit the audio for the weather forecast and edit ad-libs that would later be sent to clients who paid for our on-air advertising. Every day there was something new going on in my South Coast area. It was my job to scope out what was happening in the community and report on it.
Working at the station I had my fair share of weird encounters. One of my favorite callers was Butch. He’s an older gentleman who likes to drink. He would always call-in and tell us jokes. They never really made any sense, but we laughed anyway, and he often visited us at live broadcasts out of the station. I took pride in all of the connections I formed with fans of Fun 107.
My favorite part of the whole summer was restaurant week. During this week, we ventured out of the station to host our broadcast at some of the best restaurants across a handful of local cities. Mind you, we were hosting the show from 5:30 a.m.-10 a.m. Imagine eating quesadillas, lobster, calamari, and so many other random items at 7 a.m.? To top it off, the entire week I ate for free.
Interning at a radio station is anything but easy. You’re looking at early mornings, late nights, weekends, crazy call-ins, and everything in between,. but the experience is more than rewarding. I learned what it took to host a morning show, edit content in a hurry, and produce blogs about the latest entertainment news on a deadline. A major plus was meeting some celebs along the way, working with a team of brilliant minds, and becoming an asset to some of the very best in radio.
Upon my return to Emmanuel I realized I grew so much as a person and a professional from this experience and I am so thankful for the roots I placed at Fun 107.
