Nothing is as unforgiving, ever-changing, and fast-paced as the fashion industry. As Heidi Klum always says, “One day you’re in, the next day you’re out.” Truer words have never been spoken. Everybody knows that fashion operates by the extremes; remember when wide leg pants were a thing, and then when our jeans were so tight it was hard to breathe, let alone sit down, now a looser fit is in fashion (mom jeans) and straight leg jeans are also coming back – this fall you’ll be wearing the ones that are frayed at the end over some ankle boots. Dare I even mention when low-rise jeans were a thing, (thus muffin-top was in fashion) but now the only jeans you can buy are high-waisted. There’s a certain beauty in the evolution, predicting what comes next, seeing how trends grow and evolve, what’s the new what. But fashion is also ephemeral and cutthroat, in the dawn of a new era, did your favorite trend survive?
OUT: Exposed Bralette
Necessity is the mother of all inventions; what began as a way to wear halter tops while still wearing a bra resulted in a creative way to dress up lower cut tank tops and deep-v-sweaters. Exposed bralettes started an undergarment revolution! The trend birthed night-wear as day-wear, undergarments over your garments, lace bodysuits, and corsets came back in fashion.
IN: The Bralette Itself
First, they were an accessory to a shirt, now they ARE the shirt. Bralettes are being worn with high-waisted trousers and a blazer, perfect for the office, then at night, replace the blazer with a leather jacket, and the trousers with jeans, and cut loose in a city that never sleeps.
OUT: Denim on Denim
Denim on Denim may never truly go out of fashion, but it is currently being replaced…
IN: Leather on Leather
Leather on Leather is the new Denim on Denim and New York Fashion Week has just confirmed it. It’s not an exaggeration to say that 9 out of 10 designers featured leather-on-leather looks throughout their runway show, each with their own twist. Leather-on-leather was also heavily incorporated in many street style looks this year. Celebrities from Bella Hadid to Lady G, and influencers like the Kardashian’s are all rocking the new trend.
OUT: Fur Cheetah Jacket (the original)
The original faux-fur cheetah jacket: a trend that never permanently goes out of fashion, a print that is both youthful and elegantly rachet, it’s the statement piece.
IN: White Cheetah Print Jacket
Regular cheetah is out, white cheetah is in! This fall let’s channel our inner Cruella de Vil.
OUT: Athleisure
The look that college students who wake up late wear to class just got a lot more expensive…
IN: Athluxury
Nike, Adidas, and Fila, had a good run but Gucci, Balenciaga, and Givenchy are taking over. It use to be that you could either be comfortable or fashionable– now you don’t have to choose. Athluxury plays into our desire to be influencers and brand representatives, to be both comfortable and all-that-in-a-bag-of-chips. Athluxury also birthed the mixing of name brands, so wear your Balenciaga hoodie with your Gucci slides – what use to be a big fashion faux pas is now fashion forward and the ultimate show of wealth. #toorichtocare
OUT: Polka Dots
Polka dots just got an update…
IN: Stars
It’s just in, stars are the new polka dots, and they’re everywhere! They’re printed on dresses and shirts, painted on jackets and jeans, embroidered on boots, and plastered on purses.
OUT: Neon Green
The hottest trend of the spring/summer season was neon, especially neon green – well summers over…
IN: Chartreuse
Chartreuse is the new neon green!
OUT: Chokers
So long chokers, farewell 90’s nostalgia and a more adult version of my middle school grunge phase. It was nice while it lasted.
IN: Name NecklacesLet’s face it, we all want to be sex-and-the-city Carrie Bradshaw with the name necklace. This year there has been a big push for customization and individuality, we don’t want to look like everyone else. It’ll start with name necklaces, but it won’t end there. Pretty soon we’ll all be Carrie-Diaries Carrie Bradshaw with our names on our purses!
