Remember when you were in elementary school and you had all of the time in the world to read? Wow. What a time. We all sped through every Twilight novel and knew 100% if we were team Edward or Jacob. But once you get to high school and you have required reading, the joy of sitting down and picking up a good book slowly disappears. And once you get to college- forget about it. At that point you can barely make it through your reading for class, so reading for fun is just completely out of the picture. But I have good news! There is hope! Try combining all of your favorite things: friends, wine, a good cheese plate, and throw in a book… and you’ve got yourself a book club!

Here are some reasons why YOU should start a book club for your friend group.

1. It’s a good way to connect with friends

When in college, we sometimes take our friendships for granted and spend time worrying about other things. We need to remember to take some time for the gals! A book club is the perfect thing to make sure that you all meet up at LEAST once a month. Put it in all of your planners and commit to it.

2. There will be meaningful discussions!

Because we’re in college we are always annotating and discussing books for class. But it is actually such a nice feeling to talk about a book with all of your friends! Hearing their opinions and how they interpret things in a different way is awesome.

3. You’ll read books you wouldn’t have otherwise!

An easy way to set up the book club is to have one member in charge each month. That person can suggest 5 books and everyone can vote. If you do this, all of the members will read books that they never would have picked for themselves! It’s a fun way to have everyone be involved in deciding what to read next.

4. You can get creative with your monthly meetings!

Theming your meetings to go with the books you’re reading is a fun way to keep things interesting! Say you just read The Secret Life of Bees, maybe at that meeting you have honey and scones or some snacks that are mentioned in the book. This can help you further connect to the characters and get into the mood to dive into the book.

5. Wine is usually involved! And maybe even a good charcuterie board.

Snacks are a huge part of book club. And good snacks, lead to good chats. You can even make the snacks into a part of the pre-book club prep! Everyone can come over early to make cookies and it will add to the whole experience.

So if you’re looking for something to make your fall a little more fun, start a book club with all of your friends! And if your friends aren’t into reading and don’t want to be in a book club, you can follow along with Reese Witherspoon’s club called Hello Sunshine. She picks great books and is just all around the best person ever. Sooo whether you start your own book club or follow one on social media. I think it’s about time you get your read on!
