Being on Broadway for over 33 years, “The Phantom of the Opera” has become a staple show. The story follows a musical genius who hides his deformed face under a mask, a.k.a. The ‘Phantom of the Opera’. He dwells beneath the Paris Opera House anonymously tutoring a talented singer, Christine, with music he self composes. The phantom utterly adores her and her voice but when a potential suitor for Christine gets in the way, Phantom begins to terrorize anyone who steps in “his” opera house. The tragic and mysterious romance ends with an emotional closing that you will just have to experience for yourself.
One of my best friends is in love with the show and brought up the idea of going to see it. She’s seen it four times in different seats in the theater but never in the orchestra. Since it would be my first time seeing the show I said, “Why not?” and we ended up purchasing second row seats! If any of you are familiar with the show, you know that it is very dramatic and emotional. Being able to see the actors faces up close and appreciate the feelings and emotions they were portraying was absolutely worth the price. Arriving to the theater in nice clothes and ready to experience the show up close and personal was thrilling. The performance began and within the first ten minutes an enormous chandelier swooped in about arms distance over our heads!
Not knowing anything about the show, I was really blown away with how I went from laughing to completely entranced to crying and even sobbing at the end. The whole performance was incredible and now I know why it has been the longest running show on Broadway in history! If you love musicals and want to experience a romance with twists and turns like no other and songs and visuals to make you forget to even blink, “The Phantom of the Opera” is the show for you!
