Finals are here once again, and if “like right now” is the first time you’re thinking about opening a textbook, it’s time to start studying! Time is precious as you’re preparing for exams, so I’ll keep it short and sweet. Here are the ten must-know tips for passing your finals:
1. Start
Right now! Its officially time to blow the dust off your textbook and learn an entire semester’s worth of knowledge. Remember, these tips only work if you’re ~actually~ studying.
2. Eat
…but don’t break out the chips and Oreos. Instead, opt for foods like light popcorn, granola bars, fruits, and nuts that will help to keep you full and also serve as a way to keep your mind focused on the task at hand.
3. Stay Hydrated
Water is best for you but can easily get boring. You could try carbonated water with natural fruit flavors (my personal favorites are Bubly and Dasani Sparkling) or green tea (hot or iced).
4. Leave Your Room
With bed a few feet away and friends right next door, study time in your room can often turn into sleep or chatting. Your most successful study space is probably outside the dorm.
5. Find Your Study Space
Everyone has a go-to place to study. Some great options on Clemson’s campus (besides the library) are the study rooms in your building, the ASC, the Watt Center, and outdoor areas like the Amphitheater, especially as the weather is warming up.
6. Try a New Technique
Every person learns differently, and if you’re struggling, try a new study technique. One is the 25-5 method. Set a timer for 25 minutes, get as much done in that time as you can, and when the timer goes off, you can take a 5 minute break to do whatever you want. Keeping a stronger focus on your work for a shorter period of time helps you retain the most information.
7. Study Selectively
When time’s running short, you need to make the most out of every minute. If you’re running out of time, do NOT read every word of your textbook. Instead, read the summaries of chapters and the highlighted terms, then do any practice problems in the back.
8. Use Your Resources
Clemson offers so many options for you to get help academically. Ask around to see if your class has a PAL session you could attend or any drop-in tutoring hours at the ASC. Also, go to review sessions or office hours if your professor is holding them – they may give you insider information about the exam.
9. Take Practice Tests
Your professors or other students who’ve taken the class probably have old exams that you can use to study. If not, try searching online for practice questions or Quizlets on topics you’re struggling with.
10. Relax
Last but not least, relax. Don’t put too much emphasis on the grades and instead remember why you’re here in the first place. You’re here to grow your knowledge, save lives, make your family proud, change the world, and most importantly, prove to yourself that you can do it. So, go out there and study hard – and good luck!
