Spring Cleaning Series: Bedroom/Living Space Makeover

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UTSA chapter.

Your environment plays a big part in your state of mind, and getting bored of your apartment or dorm can really bring you down. Updating your bedroom or living area each season can motivate you and get you excited to start your day. But, we’re college students. We don’t have the money lying around to completely redo our decor four times a year! Luckily, there’s an affordable way to transform your room with a few simple pieces.

WHERE TO START

As usual, it’s always best to start with a clean slate. Vacuum your carpets, throw out trash, and dust off your furniture to get your room ready for a makeover. Once you’ve done that, decide what you realistically want your room to look like. Set up an inspiration board on Pinterest to get some ideas of how to work with what you’ve got, and rearrange your furniture in the most functional way.

UPCYCLING

To transform your room on a budget, upcycle old pieces to fit your new style! Instead of buying new spring themed pillows that can cost $20 each at Target, stop by your local crafts store and pick up pillow covers! Hobby Lobby has a ton of pillow covers in a variety of sizes and colors year round for about $3 each. With these, you won’t have to spend the money on seasonal pillows or worry about finding a place to store them. If you pick up some transfer paper while you’re there, you can print out any design and iron it on the pillow cover to customize your room. Artwork really pulls a room together, but pieces can be pretty pricey. If you have any frames lying around or stop by the dollar store to pick up a few, you can print out seasonal photos or inspirational quotes to hang on your wall or set on your desk to tie in your color palette.

DETAILS, DETAILS, DETAILS

Small decorative items can go a long way when it comes to decorating a room. Luckily, Target has got you covered for this one. It’s no wonder Target is every girl’s favorite place, their $1-$5 section is full of small spring nicknacks right now that are perfect for any room. Mirrors can open up a room and make it feel bigger, but can be pretty expensive. You can get small circle mirrors in a variety of colors that will brighten up your room and make a nice focal point. Target also has decorative jars and callender’s in the budget section that will spice up your shelves. Cheap throw blankets from Walmart or TJ Max can give your bed or couch a new look that will go with your revamped pillows. Plants and flowers are also a great way to get your room ready for spring and whether they’re plastic or real, they leave a space looking bright and fresh.

SAVING SPACE

Storage cubbies are cute ways to display your decor or just organize your stuff. They also work as a great makeshift stand for your TV if you don’t want to splurge on an entertainment center. Baskets scream spring and are always a go to when finding a cute way to store your stuff. They’re also currently located in Target’s budget section for just $3-$5 depending on size. If you’re down for a little DIY project, transforming little ottomans with some fabric is a great way to discreetly store your stuff and makes for a cute little seating area. So grab some of your favorite spring fabric and make a cute seat and storage area that will go with your spring aesthetic.

So what are you waiting for? Now is a great time to start your spring makeover and create your own decor that will inspire you everyday. Just by changing a few things in your room you can make it feel like a whole new space. It’s the little things that matter, and an environment that you’re happy to walk into everyday can really make a difference in your overall attitude. So get to redecorating and make a space you love this spring!
