Celebrities have it all, the fame, the fortune. They have their lives together and as viewers and fans, we just watch. But the truth is that celebrities aren’t just characters on a tv screen, they aren’t separate from their lifestyle and they definitely aren’t immune to the things people have to say about them online. Social media is a platform for a lot of wonderful content, but there is also a dark side to it that people tend to ignore sometimes.
Cyberbullying is an unfortunate package deal when it comes to social media platforms. Users express their lives and opinions daily which leaves open communication for hurtful comments and criticism from those who hide behind their screen. Hundreds of thousands of people have been victims of online bullying and that doesn’t stop at celebrities.
When you’re in the public eye, people think that hate doesn’t affect you. That when you put yourself out in the public, you’re subject to awful comments about your appearance, or criticism about your life. People look at celebrities as just a form of entertainment, as if they are not human too. The likes of Alessia Cara, Demi Lovato and Justin Bieber are just a couple celebrities that endure this kind of online bullying which has driven them further from the art they love to do. Influencers and micro-influencers are also very much in the public eye and experience the same kind of treatment. Viewers make hate comments on YouTube videos and Instagram posts saying some of the worst things to content creators. Â
They struggle with things just like everyone else does, and their mental health is just as important as everyone else’s. The line of work they do or the amount of money they make does not eradicate the fact that they are also human beings who go through stuff.
No one deserves to be bullied. No one deserves to have mean comments made about the way they look or about their personal life. Everyone’s mental health deserves to be valued whether you’re in the public eye or not. Remember that words hurt and that spreading love is a far better way to spend your time online than spreading hate.
Spread love Collegiettes!
