If you are not already aware, the growth of veganism in the United States has steadily been increasing. Not to be confused with vegetarianism that just cuts out meat- vegans do not consume any animal products including meat, dairy, seafood, and eggs. According to the Food Revolution, 6% of Americans in 2017 claimed to be vegan and globally vegan options are becoming more accessible. Becoming more aware of where our food comes from as well as the health benefits of the lifestyle is causing plant-based food consumption to rise. Over the last decade, as the vegan movement has heightened, a few well-known politicians have spoken out about their switch in eating habits.

Former President Bill Clinton announced his decision to go vegan in 2010 when heart complications arose and he had to have a quadruple heart bypass. Meat, egg, and dairy products have been linked to heart disease because of their high levels of cholesterol and saturated fat. Clinton’s decision was driven by these issues as well as wanting to be around for his grandchildren.

Following Clinton’s lead, three years later vice president Al Gore switched to veganism for reasons besides health concerns. Gore is recognized for his work with environmental issues during his term and becoming vegan has not only helped his stance but also made him feel better in general. Many choose veganism as a means of saving the planet because it reduces your personal carbon footprint by lowering greenhouse gases and energy consumption.

Beginning his road to a plant-based diet, New Jersey Senator Cory Booker first became vegetarian in 1992 before progressing to veganism in 2014. Cutting out different food groups step-by-step can help your body adjust to a new diet. The 2020 presidential candidate chose to go vegetarian originally for health and fitness reasons. After more research on the impacts of a vegan diet on the environment and how eating meat contributes to animal cruelty, Booker began cutting out other animal products. As a vegan running for office he wants to increase awareness about our food choices on our health and the impact of our current food system on animals.
