Spring break is just around the corner and everyone’s excited to get a well-deserved week off. This is a time for people to reconnect with old friends, catch up with family, travel to new places, and so much more. But when you’re not out partying or studying for an exam inconveniently scheduled for the next week, it’s nice to have a day or two to relax and fix up your room. These fun and easy DIY projects can help you wind down during spring break and add character to your living space.
1. Cacti in painted terracotta pots
Who doesn’t love a cheap and easy way to brighten up your room? With a few terracotta pots and cactus plants, you can create a cute set up on a windowsill, desk, shelf, or bedside table. Grab a few acrylic paints and foam brushes and paint the pots to your heart’s desire. I’ve found that painting on smooth surfaces like these pots can be super relaxing and stress-reducing. You could even take some old tea mugs and mason jars and use them as pots, too!
2. Neon lights
If you have time for a big project over spring break, this one is for you. I think neon lights are the coolest way to add a pop of color in any room. You’ll need EL wire (stands for electroluminescent wire, this is what makes it neon), metal wire, a wire cutter, and a hot glue gun, all of which can be found on Amazon for decently cheap prices. Once you have metal and EL wire, you can customize your design by writing it out on paper and bending the metal wire to match that design. You can then use a hot glue gun to attach the EL wire to the metal wire design and use a wire cutter to remove excess pieces. Simply use a command hook to hang the new lights on the wall, and you’re done! The hardest part of this project can be bending metal wire smoothly to match your design, so make sure you buy a metal wire that can bend easily.
3. Pressed flowers
Pressed flowers are such a cute decoration for your room that allows you to preserve your favorite flowers for a long time. It’s also a great DIY project to do in springtime as the flowers are starting to bloom. Pressing flowers is easy if the flowers you pick are fresh. It’s important to prepare the flowers for pressing by putting them in a vase with water as soon as you cut them. You should also cut the stem shorter and remove the leaves at the bottom. Once you are ready to press them, get a heavy book and lay the flowers flat on a page. When you close the book, you can add more weight by stacking books on top of it. Keep in mind that it takes a week or two for the flower to become completely pressed and dry. When you’re ready to take them out, you can put them in a frame and hang them on the wall. I also think it’s super cute and artsy to hang them on the wall by a string. It’s all up to you!
4. Spice up a mirror frame
A subtle way of styling up your room is by personalizing a mirror. The other day, my roommate told me about a mirror her dad designed by picking up seashells in Miami Beach and gluing them onto the frame of a mirror in their house. Doesn’t that sound cute? You could do the same on a mirror frame with a photo collage, paisley designs, sequins, and even pressed flowers. A simple DIY project like this one takes no time at all, makes your room unique, and can even bring you sentimental memories.
5. Photo collage with Washi tape
I know, who doesn’t already have a photo collage on the wall in their room? You might think hanging up pictures around each other is the only way to make a good photo collage, but there’s so much more you can do to make it original and cute. You can buy Washi Tape with all different colors and designs for less than $20 to make a photo collage stand out. When attaching photos to your wall, use the washi tape as a frame around pictures. Washi tape will brighten up your room and make the pictures on your wall look better than ever. You can buy Washi tape here.
