On Tuesday, February 19, 2019, Karl Lagerfeld, Chanel’s longtime creative director, passed away. Lagerfeld became a designer for Chanel in 1982, a time where the brand was considered nearly dead. He is credited for not only reviving the brand, but also for making it the massive success it is today. In 1965, Lagerfeld became the creative director for Fendi, a position he held until his death in 2019. He created his own line, Karl Lagerfeld, in 1984, later selling it to Tommy Hilfiger, but remained the brand’s chief creator. Lagerfeld lived in Paris with his cat, Choupette, who rose to her own stardom over the years.
Although remembered mainly for his huge contributions to the fashion industry, Lagerfeld has also been the source of much controversy over his bountiful career. His questionable comments spanned topics such as the #MeToo movement, the British Royal Family, and the weight of many famous female celebrities – just to name a few.
Less favorable comments aside, Lagerfeld was a unique, opinionated man whose legacy has left behind many motivating words. Here are 6 of Karl Lagerfeld’s less controversial quotes to consider in your day-to-day.
1. Have new experiences: “What I enjoy most is doing something I’ve never done before.”
2. Learn as much as you can: “The brain is a muscle, and I’m kind of a body-builder.”
3. Live in the moment: “You have to like the present; if not, your life becomes secondhand if you think it was better before. Or that it will be better in the future.”
4. Work hard: “Don’t overact the story of your name. Overact the story of your work.”
5. Do what you love: “I never look at my watch when I’m sketching!”
6. Be true to who you are: “I’m totally myself.”
