With the 2020 US presidential race steadily approaching, numerous Democratic candidates have begun announcing their bids against Donald Trump for the White House. With what is predicted to be a large pool of candidates, here is a rundown of the major candidates who have already announced that they’ll be challenging Trump in 2020:

Sen. Elizabeth Warren

A sharp critic of big banks, unregulated capitalism, and Donald Trump, Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren became the first major candidate to enter the 2020 race. From a middle class family in Oklahoma, Warren has declared that she is “fighting for America’s promise for all of us.”

Sen. Kamala Harris

The daughter of immigrants from India and Jamaica, 54-year-old Kamala Harris announced her bid for the White House on Martin Luther King Jr Day. She is a Californian senator, renowned prosecutor, and wants to be the first black woman elected president of the United States.

Julián Castro

Previously serving as the mayor of San Antonio and President Barack Obama’s Housing and Urban Development Secretary, Julián Castro is running for president and believes he can be the “antidote to Trump” on controversial issues like immigration.

Rep. Tulsi Gabbard

After serving in combat in Iraq and Kuwait with the Hawaiian Army National Guard, Tulsi Gabbard became the first Samoan-American and first Hindu elected to Congress. At the age of 37, if elected, she would be the youngest President in American history.

Sen. Bernie Sanders

Three years after competing against Hillary Clinton in the 2016 Democratic primary race, Bernie Sanders is set to announce his second presidential campaign. As a self-described “democratic socialist” and with a political career of 40 years, Sanders has already been working on improving his outreach to minorities and re-energizing his progressive movement.

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand

New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand announced her candidacy several weeks ago, stating that “As a young mom, I’m going to fight for other peoples’ kids as hard as I’m going to fight for my own, which is why I believe healthcare should be a right and not a privilege.”

Pete Buttigieg

Pete Buttigeg, the 37-year-old mayor of South Bend, Indiana, is a veteran of the war in Afghanistan and the first openly gay candidate to join the race. Popular in Indiana, Buttigieg is hoping to end “the corruption, the fighting, the lying, [and] the crisis” of Washington.

Further potential, but not yet confirmed, candidates include Former Vice President Joe Biden, Former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, and Beto O’Rourke.
