How to Have the Greatest Valentine’s Day Ever – If You’re Single

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at CU Boulder chapter.

Valentine’s Day can strike up some lonely and depressing emotions for single gals and guys. This time of year is all about celebrating the person you love most – but why can’t that be you? We’re all about celebrating loving yourself in 2019, and Valentine’s Day shouldn’t distract from that. This year, I’m challenging you to make yourself your own valentine by participating in some good ol’ self-love— whatever that means for you. Here are some ideas on how to make this love-filled holiday a fun and fulfilling experience.

Take Yourself on a Date

For some, staying in might be a depressing way to spend this holiday. If that sounds like your train of thought, who says you have to stay in? Take yourself out for a fun evening – dinner and a movie are always a good idea, and you won’t have to share your fries. If the weather permits, try a nice picnic— grab a bottle of your favorite wine and pick up some of your favorite food. Look nice for yourself, and even go the extra mile and buy yourself some nice flowers. You don’t need anyone to make you feel worthy or wanted— you’ve got the power to do all of that for yourself. Plus, who knows? Maybe you’ll meet another single with the same idea.

Stay in (Because You Want To)

If you’re a homebody by nature, there is nothing wrong with staying home. But if you choose to do so, make sure you’re staying in because that’s what you want to do, not what you think is expected of you. And if you do, don’t sit on the couch scrolling through your ex’s Insta and shoving discount chocolates into your mouth— take time to relax. There’s no shaming in taking tonight to order your favorite takeout and curl up with your current Netflix binge. My advice? Treat yourself to one of those ridiculously extravagant bubble baths you see all over Pinterest – rose petals, candles, and all.

Get Together With Your Fellow Singles

Know anyone else who would otherwise be spending Valentine’s Day alone? Hit them up for a fun day! Maybe there’s a cool art exhibit you’ve always wanted to visit, or maybe you’ve been dying to show them your favorite show. Today is the perfect day to ask for their company and make it a fun day for the two of you to celebrate your friendship. But remember, if they opt to spend their V-Day in a different way, it might not be personal. Everyone’s got their own ways of spending this lovey-dovey holiday if they’re alone

Find Your Guilty Pleasures

We all have a guilty pleasure, even if we don’t like to admit it. Mine currently includes Netflix’s “You” and pints of vanilla ice cream. If you’ve got that one thing that you might feel a little ashamed about enjoying, today is the day to fully embrace it. Who’s gonna judge you? And if they do, who cares? Today is your day to love you, and whatever that means— no matter how embarrassing you might think it is— throw yourself into it with open arms. Besides, everyone’s got a guilty pleasure, which means nobody’s got room to judge you for yours.

Indulge in Some…Self Love

Let’s not beat around the bush here. Masturbation is God’s gift to humankind. Just because you’re single this Valentine’s Day doesn’t mean you can’t get busy with yourself! Make sure you’ve got some space to yourself to do so, and have at it. No shame allowed.

Personally, I’ve always loved Valentine’s Day. Whether or not I’m in a relationship, having a holiday dedicated solely to love is something I’ve always found beautiful. But the beautiful thing about this holiday is that it doesn’t just have to be about romantic love. It can be about any type of love – between you and your friends, your family, your dog, or even just yourself. Instead of feeling alone or depressed, remember that you deserve a day of love, whatever type of love that might be. Happy Valentine’s Day!
