A Semester Without Netflix

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Ole Miss chapter.

It’s bold. It’s revolutionary. It’s brave. Okay, I’m being a bit dramatic. But honestly, for some, I really am being brave.

I’m giving up two guilty pleasures that do nothing but take from my life this semester.

Netflix and alcohol.

Yep. I said it, no wine and no netflix. Actually, correction: no TV period. No TV series. No binging. Nope. I am giving it all up for one semester to write about how it changes my life. I know one way it will change it: money. And yep, I said it no margs while getting Tex-Mex or glass of wine after a bad date. Bye to both.

  1. It will save me just 50 dollars in five months for canceling Netflix. Just say I get one bottle a wine a month for 5 months that costs 14 dollars a month, that’s 70 dollars! Together that’s 120. And let’s be honest, I would’ve spent way more than that on wine. I buy a bottle about every two weeks typically…something I admittedly don’t have the money for.

  2. It gives me more time to dedicate towards my goals: read more, write more and be more focused.

  3. It makes me more conscious of my time.

  4. It makes me more aware of how I feel instead of using Netflix or wine as a coping mechanism. It’s about owning my feelings right here and right now…not ignoring them.

So, what gave me this idea? As I was working on launching my website, I realized I needed a few extra bucks a month to get it up and running. Also, what could I cut out and how could I get more time to blog? I realized there were a few things in my life that weren’t giving me what I was paying for: wasted time and wasted money for little or no long term happiness, joy, or pleasure. It was vain and momentary, so I decided those aren’t the things I needed in my life. TV and wine were two things that topped this list and those were the things that I had to say “buh-bye” to.

Is there something you’ve been wanting to do? But you keep telling yourself, you don’t have time? Probably. And if you’re like me, you’ve deceived yourself into thinking, “I’m too busy, too overworked.” While that might be true, I have this piece of advice: to have your dream job, you must first work two jobs, your current and your dream job. That leaves little time for things like Netflix and wine (at the moment). But in the long run, you’ll be the one living your dreams. So keep grinding, girl! You’ve got this!

Disclaimer: I’m not saying to burn yourself out. I wanna be clear, you need rest. But Netflix and wine aren’t as much rest as they are distractions. Make the most of your rest time and the rest of your time. If you find yourself in need of rest, sit down and enjoy meditation. Read something for fun. Take a bath. Do something that’s genuine rest and leave the rest to when life isn’t as busy as it is in college, girl…or really ever for that matter? I just think we’ve fooled ourselves into thinking being lazy and resting are the same thing and sometimes they can be, but a lot of times, our supposed “rest” makes us feel just as stressed as if we did nothing to rest.

If you think this is interesting and you wanna join in, tweet at me about what you’re gonna try and give up @livesas3. I am going to try to tweet more about my updates!

Side note: day one is already hard when you’re busy and you think to yourself: maybe I just need some background noise. Honey, no. Just keep on trucking with no distractions. You’ve got this, girl, and so do I!
